Surgical Sutures for Dentistry

During dental treatments, such as oral surgery, surgical sutures are used to close and protect the wound. In this category, you will find a variety of needle-and-thread combinations designed for wound management following surgical procedures, including complex extractions or apicoectomies.

Choosing the right suture material is essential for optimal healing, patient comfort, and minimizing the risk of infection. Options include resorbable and non-resorbable threads in different thicknesses, suitable for soft tissue adaptation in the oral cavity.

Resorbable or Non-Resorbable Suture Material

Suture material that completely dissolves over time and does not need to be removed manually in the dental practice is called resorbable suture material. If the suture needs to be removed after a few days in the practice, it is classified as non-resorbable suture material.

For example, sutures made from polyamide, polypropylene, or silk are non-resorbable, whereas materials such as catgut or polyglycolic acid (PGA) are resorbable. Non-resorbable sutures are often available in coloured threads (e.g., black or blue), making them easier to see and simplify removal.

Whether you are looking for resorbable or non-resorbable suture material, this category offers a comprehensive selection to suit all dental applications.

Monofilament or Multifilament Sutures

In dentistry, atraumatic suture material is used after surgical procedures. This type of surgical suture is directly welded to the needle, ensuring maximum tissue preservation during stitching.

The type of suture also plays a crucial role in protecting tissue. Braided or twisted sutures (multifilament) offer high tensile strength and excellent knot security, but compared to monofilament sutures, they can have a sawing effect and a higher risk of bacterial contamination.

Monofilament sutures consist of a single strand, resulting in lower resistance when passing through tissue. Because the risk of bacterial transfer is reduced and the oral mucosa is naturally colonized by many bacteria and fungi, monofilament materials such as polypropylene sutures are widely used in dental applications.

Suture Thickness and Tensile Strength

Although multifilament sutures are generally considered stronger than monofilaments, the material and suture diameter also play a crucial role. Suture thickness is often indicated in USP, referring to the United States Pharmacopeia system (USP system). Another common standard is the metric EP system (European Pharmacopoeia).

The thickness indicated on the packaging represents the minimum diameter—the actual suture is usually slightly thicker. When selecting atraumatic suture material, it is important to choose a diameter that provides sufficient tensile strength while remaining as thin as possible to minimize tissue trauma and support optimal wound healing.

For professional and safe suturing, we also offer suitable needle holders, tweezers, and suture scissors in our Dental Instruments category.
