Zinc Paste Bandages for Compression Therapy

A zinc paste bandage is a gauze bandage impregnated with a special zinc paste that is applied wet and gradually dries over several hours.

Zinc paste bandages, such as Varolast Plus, belong to the category of semi-rigid compression bandages and are generally supplied unsterile. They consist of gauze impregnated with zinc paste. To prevent the bandage from drying out before use, each bandage is individually sealed in airtight packaging. The zinc paste bandage is applied wet and gradually hardens over time, similar to a plaster cast, although its rigidity is considerably lower than that of plaster bandages.

The zinc paste bandage is available in a variety of types. To make application easier, elastic zinc paste bandages are commonly used, as it is difficult to control the compression with rigid bandages. The Zinc Paste Bandage Stabilises the Joint

Applying a zinc paste bandage not only compresses the tissue but also exerts counter-pressure on the muscles. This promotes better circulation, accelerates the reduction of swelling, and helps stabilise the wrapped joint. Many patients also find the slightly cooling effect of the zinc paste bandage particularly comfortable.

Zinc Paste Bandages + Underlay

When applying a zinc paste bandage, doctors usually wrap it over a textile underlayer, such as tubular bandages or padding, rather than directly on the skin. This helps prevent pressure points and makes the bandage easier to remove later.

What Are the Benefits of a Zinc Paste Bandage?

Zinc paste bandages are slip-resistant, non-irritating, and permeable to air and exudate.

When Is a Zinc Paste Bandage Recommended?

These bandages are most commonly used for orthopaedic aftercare following sprains, with or without ligament injuries of the ankle, knee, or wrist. The zinc paste bandage helps reduce swelling and stabilises the affected area. Other applications include treatment of tendinitis, epicondylitis, persistent oedema, and superficial vein congestion.

When Should a Zinc Paste Bandage Not Be Used?

Use is not recommended in cases of allergy to the ingredients, skin eczema, skin injuries, or acute injuries with a strong tendency to swell.
