First Aid Kits for Clinics, Workplaces & Schools
A first aid kit or box is an essential part of the required emergency equipment in any workplace. The contents include various bandages and other first aid materials (e.g., scissors, quick wound dressings DIN 13019, rescue blankets, bandage packs, plasters, plaster dispensers, or first aid instructions) necessary for providing first aid. These kits are made from robust materials, such as ABS plastic, ensuring the functionality and protection of the contents against external influences.
The configuration of first aid kits depends on the type of workplace and the number of employees. In larger workplaces, a small kit may no longer be sufficient, and a larger kit compliant with DIN 13169 is legally required. First aid boxes are also suitable for schools, kindergartens, and recreational areas. Additionally, drivers are required to carry a car first aid kit according to DIN 13164 (regulations may vary depending on the country).

Standardization According to DIN
The law requires that first aid kits and boxes comply with certain DIN standards depending on their intended use:
- DIN 13157 – for the “small first aid kit”
- DIN 13164 – for the German automotive first aid kit
- DIN 13169 – contains double the contents of the “small first aid kit”
Quick Access to First Aid Kits is Crucial
It is particularly important that first aid kits or boxes are stored so that every employee can easily access them at any time, ensuring immediate first aid in an emergency. Many first aid kits come with a matching wall mount for this reason. To make workplace kits compliant with DIN 13157 or DIN 13169 clearly visible, they are usually brightly coloured (yellow or orange). The standard symbol (white cross on a green background) should either be printed on the kit or displayed on a sign above it.
Expired Items in First Aid Kits Should Always Be Replaced
Items in first aid kits or boxes have a use-by date. Up to this date, sterility or functionality (e.g., adhesive strength of wound plasters) is guaranteed. Once expired, products must be replaced with new ones. If any or all materials exceed their expiration date, the kit no longer meets the minimum DIN requirements.
Replacement is possible with complete refill sets and assortments for first aid kits, all of which meet legal requirements. Alternatively, a standard first aid box may also be used, provided its contents comply with legal standards (e.g., DIN 13157, DIN 13164, or DIN 13169). First aid kits offer the advantage of larger dimensions, making materials more quickly accessible than in smaller first aid boxes, which are often limited in size and can slow down emergency response.
