The dental drill is part of the rotary instruments and is a very important specialized tool for the dentist. It consists of three sections: the head, neck, and shank. The head is the actual working part, and the shank serves for attachment in the drive. Depending on the procedure, the dentist selects the correct size, shape, and sharpness to work as gently as possible. It is important to note whether it is an FG shank or an RA shank. FG shank drills are smooth and have a diameter of 1.6 mm, whereas RA shanks have a notch and are clamped into the handpiece. The diameter of the angled handpiece shank (RA) is 2.35 mm.

To work with drill bits, burs, or grinding instruments, the dentist also requires a motor-driven handpiece or angled handpiece. Depending on whether the motor is electric or air-driven, the speed differs and can range between 1,000 – 40,000 RPM (electric) and 500 – 20,000 RPM (air-driven). Drilling typically produces drill noises, which most patients find very unpleasant. Additionally, the motors can be equipped with lighting and a guide for water or a spray system.

Diamond burs are also used for removing caries or preparing cavities for fillings. Depending on the depth of the caries, drilling can cause pain, making local anesthesia necessary. With anesthesia, the caries treatment is mostly completely painless for the patient.
