Reflex Hammer & Tuning Fork in Diagnostics

The neurological reflex hammer is used for reflex testing as part of the initial neurological examination. By testing the reflexes, conclusions can easily be drawn about nerve damage to the spinal cord nerves. Depending on the design, the reflex hammer may contain other neurological-diagnostic instruments, such as brushes or pins as well as different rubber attachments. In addition, some models can be used as percussion hammers to assess organs by tapping sound.

For Medical Students Learning the Neurological Examination Technique

Especially for medical students in the preclinical phase or during a clinical traineeship, checking one's own and others' reflexes is one of the most important diagnostic methods to be learned. To assess the reflexes, which are sometimes difficult to trigger, it is advisable to always work with the same set of instruments. Using your own hammer facilitates the triggering of reflexes, for example the Troemner reflex or the Masseter reflex. The absence of these reflexes is usually due to poor performance of the reflex test. Many reflex hammers have very compact dimensions and a low weight so that a combination hammer can be easily carried in the gown pocket.

Reflex Hammers According to Babinski, Buck, Trömner & Taylor

The Babinski reflex hammer features a special and a retractable needle in the handle. It is used not only as a percussion hammer for tapping organs but also to examine pain and touch sensitivity. The Buck-style reflex hammer has a head with a small rubber tip on one side and a larger rubber tip on the other.

Different versions of the Buck-type models vary in features. For example, the Buck Reflex Hammer includes both a needle and an integrated brush, whereas the Luxamed Buck Reflex Hammer has only a needle for testing skin sensitivity but is particularly lightweight at 90 g, making it very easy to handle.

The neurological Trömner Reflex Hammer features a head with a larger and a smaller end. Additionally, it is equipped with a neurological testing tip and brush, allowing sensitivity examinations and testing of skin reflexes. Trömner reflex hammers are also available in heavier versions; for example, the Luxamed Trömner Reflex Hammer weighs 245 g.

Tuning Forks for ENT & Neurology

Medical tuning forks are also diagnostic instruments used in neurology or ENT, depending on the model. Our range includes tuning forks by Rydel-Seiffer, Lucae, and Hartmann from renowned manufacturers, available with or without a base and damper. Tuning forks can be used to test a patient’s hearing or vibration perception at different Hz frequencies, helping to identify potential conditions, for example in neurology.

The Rydel-Seiffer tuning fork by Arno Barthelmes is a medical instrument with a frequency of 64 Hz with damper and 128 Hz without damper. The base of the instrument is removable. Optionally, the tuning fork can be laser-engraved to give it a personal touch.

Neurological Sensitivity Testing Devices

Medical sensitivity testing devices allow the diagnosis of functional impairments in skin surface sensitivity, such as limitations in temperature perception or two-point discrimination. Disturbances in this area can indicate nerve damage, for example polyneuropathy.

Whether reflex hammers, tuning forks, or affordable student sets for medical students – our online shop for medical supplies offers the right diagnostic instrument for your needs. In addition to hammers and tuning forks, you will also find stethoscopes and other tools for basic diagnostic setups as well as specialised applications.
