Finding the Right Dermatoscope
In this category you will find a comprehensive selection of different medical dermascopes from well known manufacturers such as DermLite, VISIOMED, KaWe and Firefly. The individual dermascopes differ not only in their design, but also in their intended use. Below you will find some important information to help you find the right dermascope to suit your dermatology needs.
Dermatoscopes with Contact Plates
Contact dermatoscopes feature a contact plate that is moistened with immersion fluid and placed directly on the skin to minimise light refraction. This allows a clear view of deeper skin layers. Contact dermatoscopy is commonly used in skin cancer screening and represents the classical method of dermatoscopy. Many contact dermatoscopes also offer an optional contact plate with a scale, enabling immediate measurement of a lesion. At Praxisdienst, you can find devices such as the LuxaScope CCT or the DermLite DL4 for contact dermatoscopy using immersion fluid.
Dermatoscopes for non-contact examination
Non-contact dermatoscopes are equipped with polarised lighting, allowing a touch-free skin examination without immersion fluid. Reflected light from the skin surface is blocked by a polarisation filter. Under polarised light, various skin features, such as crystalline structures in lesions, are more clearly visible. These models do not require a contact plate.
Compact or Flexible?
In general, dermatoscopes can be divided into compact dermatoscopes and dermatoscope heads. While compact dermatoscopes have the power source built directly into the device, dermatoscope heads are connected to a battery handle or charging handle. The advantage of these systems is that the handle only needs to be purchased once and can then be used with various instrument heads.
These systems are particularly cost-effective for doctors who perform different instrument-based examinations as part of their work, saving costs efficiently.
Compact dermatoscopes, on the other hand, are especially suitable for mobile use and for digital dermatoscopy in combination with a smartphone or tablet.
At Praxisdienst, you will find a wide selection of compact dermatoscopes, such as the DermLite HÜD2 Dermatoscope, as well as various high-quality dermatoscope heads, for example, the ri-derma® by Riester.
Digital Dermatoscopy with Dermatoscope and Smartphone
Digital dermatoscopy plays an important role in dermatology, especially for patients whose noticeable skin changes need to be monitored and documented over time. Digital documentation is also highly effective for tracking malignant skin changes (skin cancer) before and after surgery.
Professional documentation includes not only a photo of the skin lesion but also the date of examination, notes on symptoms, the initial diagnosis, and the examination schedule – all of which can be stored digitally. Ideally, an overview image is also captured to record the exact location of the skin change.
Since documenting with a digital camera can be time-consuming, more and more doctors are turning to the time-saving and convenient smartphone-assisted documentation. In this process, the dermatoscope is connected to the smartphone via a special adapter, and images are captured using the smartphone camera. The photos can then either be saved and labelled in the phone’s gallery or managed through an app. A popular connectable dermatoscope is the DermLite Handyscope, which offers comparable functionality to the HEINE iC1 and can be used with a wide range of smartphone models.
High-Quality Dermatoscopes at Praxisdienst
DermLite offers various solutions for both contact dermatoscopy and contactless examination with polarized light. At Praxisdienst, you can find the 3GEN DermLite DL5 Dermatoscope, featuring 10x magnification and powerful LED technology, including 4 UV LEDs, 16 white LEDs, and 4 Pigment-Boost LEDs. Its variable polarization system allows users to switch between polarized and non-polarized modes, with the polarization range adjustable via a simple turn-and-press button.
The DermLite DL4W Dermatoscope delivers crisp, high-quality images with realistic color rendering and can be attached to all common smartphones and tablets, unlike some alternatives such as the Heine NC 2 Dermatoscope.
The KaWe Eurolight D30 LED Dermatoscope offers excellent value for money, comparable in functionality to the Heine Delta 20 T. It features a high-quality metal rechargeable handle, 10x magnification, and adjustable brightness. Its removable contact plate makes it suitable for both contact and contactless dermatoscopy.
Important Questions Before Buying a Dermatoscope:
- Do I want to perform digital dermatoscopies and document the images?
- What level of magnification do I need?
- Which light source should I use? (LEDs are generally more durable and powerful than halogen lamps)
- Should the dermatoscope have a contactless mode with polarized light?
- Do I need particularly small contact plates to examine hard-to-reach areas?
- Which types of skin changes do I want to examine? (e.g., pigmented lesions, melanomas, foreign bodies, parasites)
- What color rendering index do I require?
