Surgical Suture for Wound Closure
Surgical sutures are needle-and-thread combinations used in hospitals and clinics to close open wounds. These sutures feature variously shaped needles combined with either absorbable or non-absorbable threads, depending on the clinical requirements.
Absorbable Suture for Surgery
Absorbable sutures consist of a needle-and-thread combination in which the thread does not need to be removed from the wound, as it is gradually absorbed by the body over time. This makes them particularly useful for procedures in hard-to-reach areas or on organs, where removing the thread would otherwise require an additional surgical intervention.
When a long resorption time is required, the Surgicryl Monofilament is an excellent choice. This monofilament suture offers a particularly smooth passage through tissue and good knot-sliding properties, making it ideal for slowly healing wounds, as well as for applications in urology or abdominal wall closure.
For cases requiring a rapid resorption, Praxisdienst offers Surgicryl Rapid from SMI. This braided, coated multifilament made of polyglycolic acid is fully absorbed within 42 days, making it particularly suitable for fast-healing wounds.
In addition, we provide a wide range of other needle-and-thread combinations, such as the high-quality Vicryl Plus from Ethicon. The absorbable Vicryl Plus suture is antibacterially coated, offering protection for the patient’s wound against bacterial colonisation, including Staphylococcus aureus.
Non-Absorbable Suture Material for Wound Closure
Non-absorbable sutures consist of a surgical needle and a durable thread that must be removed from the tissue at a later stage. These threads are available in both monofilament and multifilament forms and are made from a variety of materials, such as polyamide or polyester, to suit different surgical requirements.
At Praxisdienst, you can find non-absorbable sutures such as the SMI Polyester suture. This needle-and-thread combination is made from braided multifilament, offering excellent flexibility and high tensile strength, making it ideal for use in orthopaedics for stitching skin or tendons.
We also offer monofilament sutures in our shop, such as Dafilon Blue. The monofilament design allows a smooth passage through tissue without a sawing effect, and monofilaments generally exhibit reduced bacterial adherence compared to multifilament threads.
When selecting the right suture for your procedure, it is important to consider not only the type and length of the thread but also the needle shape (including curvature, body, tip, and size). That is why our Surgical Sutures category offers a wide range of ready-to-use, individually sterile-packed needle-and-thread combinations with different needle types and thread lengths, ensuring you have the perfect suture for every surgical application.
Additional materials for wound closure, including dressings, plaster casts, or adhesive plasters, can be found in our Dressings and Bandages category.
