Needles for Injection, Infusion and Venepuncture

Needles are among the most essential consumables in modern medicine and are used daily for injections, infusions, blood collection and puncture procedures. Depending on the application, they vary in diameter, length, bevel and connection type, and must be selected carefully to ensure safe, precise and tissue-friendly use.

They are used for intramuscular, subcutaneous and intravenous injections, as well as in infusion therapy and diagnostic procedures such as blood sampling. Specialised dispensing pins and transfer spikes are also available for the preparation, mixing and transfer of medications.

At Praxisdienst, you will find a comprehensive range of sterile needles for professional use in medical practices, hospitals and care settings – including injection needles, safety needles, winged infusion sets (butterfly needles), IV cannulas and dispensing pins and transfer spikes in a variety of sizes and designs.

Which Needle for Which Application?

Selecting the appropriate needle depends on the intended application, route of administration, and requirements for safety, flow rate and handling. The following needle types are used in clinical practice depending on specific requirements.

Injection Needles
Injection needles are used for intramuscular, subcutaneous and intravenous injections. Selection depends on the route of administration, anatomical site and the viscosity of the medication.

Dispensing Pins & Transfer Spikes
These needles are used for the withdrawal, mixing and transfer of liquids from ampoules, vials and infusion containers.

Irrigation Cannulas
Irrigation Cannulas feature a rounded tip and are used for the atraumatic application or aspiration of liquids in wound care.

Safety Needles
Safety needles feature integrated protection mechanisms that secure the needle tip after use, helping to reduce the risk of needlestick injuries.

Butterfly Needles
Butterfly needles (winged infusion sets), facilitate controlled venepuncture and are particularly suitable for patients with difficult venous access.

Needle Properties and Selection

Which needle size should be used?

The diameter (gauge) affects flow rate and ease of use. Finer needles are suitable for subcutaneous injections and fragile veins, while larger diameters are required for viscous solutions.

Which needle length is required?

The required length depends on the route of administration. Shorter needles are typically used for subcutaneous injections, while intramuscular injections require longer needles.

What does needle bevel mean?

The bevel determines how easily the needle penetrates tissue. A precise bevel enables a gentle, atraumatic puncture with minimal discomfort.

When to use Luer or Luer-Lock?

Luer fittings are push-on connections, while Luer-Lock needles are secured using a screw mechanism. The latter provide a particularly secure connection, especially under higher pressure.

When are safety needles recommended?

Safety needles are used when an increased level of protection against needlestick injuries is required. Integrated mechanisms secure the needle tip after use.
