Precise Measurement of Body Temperature
Modern and digital medical thermometers are part of the standard equipment in surgeries and hospitals but are also important for private use. They enable a quick measurement within a few seconds and provide information on whether there is an increase in body temperature (fever).
Thermometers in a Range of Versions
Body temperature is usually measured axillary, sublingual, or rectally using thermometers with flexible measuring tips. For babies and young children, rectal measurement is considered the most accurate and therefore the preferred method. Thermometers designed for this purpose provide a short measurement time, with completion indicated by an acoustic signal. An additional fever alarm alerts the user to an elevated body temperature above 37.8 °C.
For those who wish to share their measurement results with their doctor, we recommend the Bluetooth Digital Thermometer UT-201BLE from A&D Instruments. It features a large display and can connect via Bluetooth to a mobile device. The free A&D Connect app allows users to store, clearly document, and, if needed, share the recorded values via email.
Measuring Temperature with Ear Thermometers
Since the ear reflects the body’s core temperature, ear thermometers such as the Braun ThermoScan PRO 6000 are among the most accurate devices. To enhance patient comfort, which is already minimal for both adults and children, the probe tip of the ear thermometer is pre-warmed. In addition to providing a quick measurement within 2 to 3 seconds, the Braun ThermoScan ear thermometer features advanced technologies: the ExacTemp technology ensures correct probe positioning, while the PerfectTemp technology compensates for external factors that could affect measurement accuracy.
Contactless Measurement with Infrared Thermometers
For patients whose temperature needs to be monitored regularly, we recommend contactless measurement on the forehead using infrared thermometers, as this non-invasive method is especially gentle for the patient. For those who want flexibility in measurement methods, the Dual Mode Infrared Thermometer is available. Thanks to its dual technology, it can be used either on the forehead or in the ear, depending on the need.
How Thermometers Work
Different types of thermometers not only vary in how measurements are taken but also in how they function. In thermometers with a measuring tip, the body temperature is measured through contact. The electrical conductivity of the sensor inside the tip changes as the temperature changes. Semiconductors commonly used in the circuit become more conductive as the temperature rises, allowing a greater flow of current and thus enabling precise measurement.
Infrared thermometers, on the other hand, enable contactless temperature measurement on surfaces. This works because all surfaces above 0°C emit infrared radiation, which the thermometer detects. Typically, a lens focuses this IR energy onto a detector, which converts it into an electrical signal for measurement.
