TENS devices (short for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) are electrostimulation devices used in electrotherapy. They are commonly employed for the treatment of chronic pain and for muscle stimulation.
Similar to electrical muscle stimulation (EMS), which is often used with EMS devices to maintain muscle function during temporary immobility or to support sports training, TENS devices deliver electrical currents to the patient’s skin via reusable adhesive electrodes (transcutaneously). According to the “Gate Control Theory,” TENS is intended to interfere with pain signals, reducing their transmission to the brain. The electrodes (pads) are placed directly on or near the area of the body being treated.
