Sterile and Non-Sterile Swabs & Compresses for Professional Wound Care
Cotton gauze swabs & compress are among the most commonly used wound care products and are primarily applied for the treatment of uncomplicated wounds. They are typically used as wound pads but can also serve as a substitute for swabs. For wounds at risk of infection, as well as in surgical settings, sterile dressings are generally preferred, while some non-sterile gauze dressings can be sterilized if required.
The different types of medical swabs and compresses in our shop:
Fleece Compresses
These are used for wound care in lightly to moderately exuding wounds. The non-woven material is skin-friendly and breathable. Particularly popular are the VK non-woven dressings from MaiMed, as they are not only soft and gentle on the skin but can also be autoclaved directly in their sterilizable paper pouch if needed.
Gauze Swabs & Compresses
Made from an open-weave, breathable fabric of degreased cotton, gauze dressings are highly absorbent. Thanks to these properties, both sterile and non-sterile gauze dressings are commonly used as wound pads for heavily exuding wounds. A special type of gauze dressing is the ES dressing, which features folded edges to prevent fraying. This ensures that loose threads do not interfere with the wound or become embedded in it.
Absorbent Gauze Swabs & Compresses
For heavily exuding wounds, absorbent dressings are usually used. These dressings offer exceptionally high absorption capacity and contain a layer of special non-woven material that prevents wound fluid from leaking through, effectively protecting the patient’s clothing.
Ointment Dressings
To support wound healing, it can be helpful to use individually packaged, ready-to-use ointment dressings. These contain a neutral ointment that protects the wound surface and edges from drying out, thereby promoting the healing process. Gel dressings, such as Suprasorb G, provide intensive moisture, support granulation and epithelialisation, and additionally help to remove necrotic tissue and wound debris.
