Synthetic Cast Bandage as an Alternative to Plaster
The synthetic cast bandage is an excellent alternative to traditional plaster casts. Thanks to its rapid curing time, lightweight design, high stability and water resistance, cast bandages are often preferred by clinicians over plaster. With appropriate padding, showering or bathing while wearing the cast is generally possible.
Immobilising Cast Bandage Made of Polyester or Fibreglass
The supporting material of a cast bandage is made either of polyester or fibreglass and is impregnated with water-activated synthetic resin. The setting time can be adjusted by controlling the water temperature and immersion time. Like a plaster cast, the cast bandage is used as an immobilising support, for example in the treatment of fractures.
An additional indication for cast bandages is the immobilisation of joints, such as after sprains or soft tissue injuries. In contrast to orthoses, treatment with a cast bandage provides almost complete immobilisation of the affected joint to protect the healing process and prevent further injury. The cast bandage can either be applied manually from individual layers or using preformed splints (longuettes).
