Different Tooth Extractions at the Dentist

A tooth extraction in dentistry refers to the complete removal of the tooth including the root. However, if a tooth has not yet erupted, for example a wisdom tooth, and the dentist needs to remove gum tissue or bone, it is considered a surgical procedure.

Nowadays, dentists always aim to preserve the patient’s teeth for as long as possible. Nevertheless, there are cases where teeth cannot be saved before extraction. For example, if the tooth is too severely damaged or too loose, the dentist must resort to forceps, as the tooth is no longer worth preserving. Many patients fear tooth extraction and associate the procedure with severe pain, but this is usually unfounded, as the jaw area around the tooth is anesthetized. Under local anesthesia, the dentist lifts the tooth from the jaw using special dental forceps and elevators. Afterwards, the socket is cleaned with a sharp spoon, and the surrounding bone is smoothed to allow the wound to heal properly. It is completely normal to experience some pain at the site during the first few days after an extraction. Generally, a painkiller helps. However, if pain occurs only after a few days, the dentist should be consulted for further treatment.

Dental Extraction Forceps

The extraction forceps is a surgical instrument and, like tweezers or a mouth mirror, is made from high-quality, medical-grade, and stainless steel. Since the dental forceps are regularly exposed to high heat during thermal disinfection, the instrument must not deform or bend.

For Tooth Extraction

For the extraction of damaged teeth, the dentist uses different types of forceps in dental practice. Tooth extractions are also often necessary in orthodontics, for example, when there is insufficient space for teeth to erupt or for wisdom teeth due to a narrow jaw. In such cases, orthodontic treatment can only be successful by removing certain teeth, often the first premolars. For impacted or malpositioned teeth that obstruct or would even negate orthodontic measures, a surgical procedure or the operative removal of these teeth is required.

However, if a broken or damaged molar with its root needs to be removed, the dentist uses a special extraction forceps. For the removal of upper molars (OK Molars), for example, the extraction forceps with Figure 17 or Figure 18 is suitable. Depending on the jaw side, a different figure is used so that the serrated side points into the vestibular bifurcation of the upper molar (serration toward the cheek).

For the removal of a tooth in the upper right quadrant, for example, the Dental Forceps Figure 17 is suitable. The forceps features a gripping profile in the beak and a serrated handle, ensuring a secure hold on the molar as well as in the hand.

The shape of the beak is adapted to the anatomy and accessibility of the teeth and differs for the upper and lower jaw. For the upper jaw, the beak is slightly curved upwards in line with the handle, whereas for incisors it is straight.

For example, for premolars, the Figure 75 extraction forceps from Passau Impex can be used. The beak has a gripping profile and is adapted in its opening, size, and width to the small lateral premolars.

In dental practice, medical instruments should always be available in sufficient quantity so that a ready-to-use, sterile forceps is available for each patient in case of emergency.

Extraction of Baby Teeth

For the removal of baby teeth, dental forceps are sized according to the proportions and anatomy of children. The pediatric forceps has a length of approximately 11 cm, making it ideal for extracting baby teeth.

Chisel Forceps in Various Shapes

The Luer Chisel Forceps features a cross-ridged handle with a spring and a beak with a groove. Due to its special shape, the forceps is easy to handle and allows access to hard-to-reach areas. For smoothing bone in smaller wounds, the Friedmann Chisel Forceps can be used, as it has a particularly narrow beak, making it ideal for more delicate wound areas.

In addition to tooth extraction forceps, orthodontic tools such as the Krampon Forceps are used. This universal forceps is used for bending wires in orthodontic appliances or for hard wires in orthodontic bands. It can also be used universally to adjust retentive elements in dentures.
