Dental Bonding: What is tooth bonding?

Bonding in dentistry, sometimes called composite bonding or teeth bonding, refers to a cosmetic procedure where a tooth-coloured composite resin material is applied to the tooth surface. The resin is carefully sculpted and bonded to the tooth using a special adhesive, creating a strong and natural-looking restoration. Dental bonding can be used to repair chipped, cracked, or discoloured teeth, close gaps between teeth, reshape teeth, and even cover exposed tooth roots in cases of gum recession. It is a relatively quick and cost-effective procedure  and the dental material used to bond your teeth looks like natural teeth enamel. Teeth bonding is a procedure that can improve the appearance and function of teeth, providing a more aesthetically pleasing smile.

Essential Composite Bonding Materials for Dentists

Dentists rely on composite bonding materials for effective tooth repair and restoration. They have a wide range of dental bonding materials to choose from. Typically, a bonding agent is directly applied to the tooth structure during treatment. This approach offers cost savings and requires less enamel removal compared to veneers. However, it's worth noting that colour options may be more limited compared to ceramic veneers.

Dental veneers are primarily a cosmetic treatment aimed at enhancing your smile rather than strengthening or repairing teeth. To achieve an even thickness and appearance, the dentist needs to grind down the affected teeth before applying veneers. Consequently, as the tooth structure is partially removed, veneers may need to be replaced periodically to maintain the desired results.

The application of dental adhesives creates a strong bond between the dentin or enamel and the composite used for fillings or to secure a crown.

Heliobond from Ivoclar is an inexpensive and high-performance dental bonding agent specifically designed for use in composite restorations. This one-component bonding is suitable for the total-etch technique and exhibits excellent adhesion to both enamel and dentin, ensuring a reliable and long-lasting bond.

Heliobond not only facilitates a strong bond between light-curing composites and precious/non-precious metals but also serves as an effective solution for sealing fissures or pits.

We offer Harvard Bond SE Dual especially for direct restorations and core build-ups. This self-etching, two-component bond ensures long-lasting and reliable adhesion of light-curing, dual-curing, and self-curing composites, compomers, and glass ionomer cements.

Composite bonding offers a notable cost advantage over alternative methods for enhancing teeth aesthetics. Moreover, patients can undergo teeth bonding treatment without anaesthesia, and unlike veneer application, there is no need for extensive grinding down of tooth enamel by the dentist.

Composite bonding is an appealing dental option due to its affordability, but it's important to note that the materials used are generally less durable compared to veneers. Depending on tooth wear and care, dental bonding may require more frequent renewal. Additionally, tooth bonding provides limited colour choices compared to veneers.

Self-Priming Adhesion Promoters

For dentists seeking to streamline treatment procedures, self-priming bonding agents like Prime&Bond NT from Dentsply are available. These dental agents allow for combined priming and bonding in a single step, saving time and effort. Additionally, Prime&Bond NT incorporates nano-filler technology, enhancing the dentin structure of the tooth for increased strength.

All-in-one preparations even allow etching, priming and bonding in a single step. At Praxisdienst you will find, for example, Revolcin One from Merz Dental.

This light-curing all-in-one preparation contains phosphoric acid methyl methacrylates and hydrophilic, cross-linked methacrylates and can be used universally for direct restorations, cavity sealants or indirect restorations.
