Impression Materials for Dentists and Laboratories
Dentists and dental laboratories require a variety of impression materials to capture accurate oral structures. The dental assistant or dentist creates a spatial negative of the patient’s teeth or oral situation. This impression is then poured in the lab to produce a plaster model, which is used for manufacturing dental prosthetics, orthodontic devices, or bite splints.
Alginate Impression Material
Alginate is an easy-to-use impression material commonly used to create study models, opposing jaw models, or planning models. The powder is mixed with the appropriate amount of water to achieve a uniform consistency. Using cold water slows the setting time, while warm water accelerates it. After taking the impression, the tray is removed, rinsed under running water, and poured promptly. If immediate pouring is not possible, the impression must be kept moist to prevent drying. Alginate impressions are therefore not suitable for definitive dental restorations due to potential inaccuracies.

Additional Impression Materials
For dental prosthetics, precise silicone materials are used. These elastic impression materials are mixed with a special activator and provide an accurate replication of oral structures, teeth, and jaw. Silicones are ideal for prepared teeth impressions, can be disinfected easily, are solvent-resistant, biocompatible, and water-repellent. There are two types: condensation-cured and addition-cured silicones. K-silicone impressions can be stored overnight, while A-silicone impressions can be stored indefinitely.
Impression Trays
To take an impression of the jaw, impression trays are required. These are available for both upper and lower jaws and in various sizes and materials to accommodate different jaw sizes. Trays feature perforations and recesses to ensure the impression material adheres properly. Additionally, pre-formed trays can be coated with an adhesive to further enhance material retention.
