Medical Tape for Medical and Orthopaedic Wraps
Medical tape is an adhesive strip for the skin, commonly used to apply functional bandages. Whether used for treatment or prevention, it does not completely immobilize the joint or muscle. Non-elastic tape merely restricts unwanted or excessive movements. Functional tape not only supports the joint but also enhances proprioception—the body’s awareness of movement—and can help limit tissue overstretching. It is particularly popular for use as sports tape.
Effects and Benefits
When applied correctly, a sports tape bandage strengthens the support of the joint’s capsule-ligament system and improves movement awareness. This heightened proprioception helps patients recognise and prevent undesirable movements. Applied firmly after an injury, the non-elastic tape can reduce the formation of bruising and swelling due to its compressive effect.
