A patient monitor displays the monitored vital signs simultaneously and in real time. These include ECG with heart rate, non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP), oxygen saturation (SpO2), respiratory rate and body temperature. Anaesthesia monitors also measure end-tidal carbon dioxide (etCO2). Waveforms and numerical values are displayed alongside each other, allowing healthcare professionals to assess the patient’s condition at a glance.
A patient monitor receives signals from connected sensors and electrodes, processes the data and continuously displays them as waveforms and numerical values. ECG cables, blood pressure cuffs and SpO2 sensors provide the measurement data. If a value exceeds the configured limits, the device triggers visual and audible alarms. Trend data storage records changes in the patient’s condition over time.
The number indicates how many vital signs parameters a device can measure simultaneously. A 7-parameter patient monitor measures ECG, heart rate, NIBP and SpO2 as well as respiratory rate, temperature and often etCO2. When selecting a monitor, the number of parameters determines the range of clinical applications, for example in anaesthesia and intensive care. For basic monitoring, a 5-parameter device is often sufficient.
A heart monitor focuses primarily on cardiac activity, usually monitoring ECG and heart rate. A patient monitor, on the other hand, is a multiparameter device that additionally monitors blood pressure, oxygen saturation, respiration and temperature. For comprehensive patient monitoring in hospitals and emergency medical services, a patient monitor is therefore the more suitable solution.
Standard accessories include the blood pressure cuff for NIBP measurement, the ECG cable with electrodes for recording heart signals and the SpO2 finger sensor for measuring oxygen saturation.
