Skin Antiseptic for Professional Skin Disinfection
Skin antisepsis is performed to prevent the spread of microbes during injections, punctures, or invasive procedures. Applying a skin disinfectant reduces or eliminates both transient and resident skin flora. Specialised skin disinfectants are available for this purpose, which can be sprayed onto the skin or applied using sterile swabs.
To ensure sufficient microbial reduction, it is essential to adhere to the recommended contact time and keep the skin moist for the entire duration. Skin disinfectants are usually colourless, but coloured products are also available to enable skin antisepsis and simultaneous marking of the surgical area before operations.
Most skin disinfectants are alcohol-based and do not contain emollients or skin-conditioning agents. This is acceptable, as skin antisepsis is not usually performed routinely. In addition to spray disinfectants, there are also skin disinfectant wipes, which can often be used for hand and surface disinfection as well. For paediatric use, painless skin disinfectants such as Octenisept from Schülke are particularly suitable.
