Lactate Measurement Explained

Discover what lactate levels reveal, how the test works and its key benefits.

Lactate Meters

A lactate meter measures the concentration of lactate in the blood, providing a key parameter for monitoring physical performance and guiding training programmes. The lactate meters available from Praxisdienst are intended exclusively for sports medicine practices, performance diagnostics centres, training and rehabilitation facilities, laboratories, and hospitals. They are not designed for recreational athletes or home use. As in vitro diagnostic medical devices (IVDs), these instruments are regulated under the IVDR (Regulation (EU) 2017/746) rather than legislation governing active medical devices.

How Lactate Measurement Works

Modern lactate meters use an enzymatic amperometric measuring principle. An enzyme on the test strip reacts with the lactate in the blood sample, generating an electrical current that is converted into a lactate value. Depending on the system, the sample is obtained from capillary blood or whole blood collected from the fingertip or earlobe. Only a very small sample volume in the microlitre range is required, and results are typically available within 10 to 15 seconds.

Test strips are device-specific consumables designed for use with a particular meter and cannot be interchanged between manufacturers. A control solution is used for routine quality control, verifying that the meter and test strip batch are functioning correctly together and ensuring accurate, reproducible results.

In performance diagnostics, lactate measurement is performed either as a single test or as part of a lactate threshold test. During a step test, lactate levels are measured at rest, during progressively increasing exercise intensity, and throughout recovery to create a complete lactate performance curve. This data helps determine the anaerobic threshold and define individual training zones. Many lactate meters feature internal memory as well as USB or Bluetooth data export for efficient documentation. Their compact design and rechargeable battery operation make them suitable for both mobile field testing and routine use in medical practices and laboratories.

Types of Lactate Measurement Equipment

The range is divided into three complementary product categories that together provide a complete lactate testing system.

Lactate Meters (Handheld and Point-of-Care Devices)

Lactate meters are compact handheld or point-of-care devices designed to measure lactate levels in capillary or whole blood, delivering results within seconds. They are ideal for sports medicine practices, performance diagnostics centres, laboratories, and healthcare facilities that require fast, reliable lactate measurements directly at the point of testing.

Test Strips and Control Solutions

Test strips and control solutions are essential consumables for every lactate measurement system. Device-specific, single-use test strips contain the required reagents, while control solutions are used for routine quality assurance to verify measurement accuracy. Compatible consumables are essential for the reliable operation of every lactate meter.

Accessories and System Components

A range of accessories completes the lactate testing system for everyday professional use. Transport cases support mobile testing, while USB and Bluetooth connectivity simplify data transfer and documentation. Lancets and capillary tubes enable safe and efficient blood sample collection, making these accessories suitable for both field testing and routine use in laboratories and medical facilities.

Device Type Sample Material Result Time Data Management Recommended For
Lactate analyser with step test function Capillary blood Approx. 10 seconds Internal memory, USB/Bluetooth Performance diagnostics, sports medicine step tests
Compact portable lactate analyser (point-of-care) Capillary / whole blood Approx. 10–15 seconds Internal memory, USB Point-of-care testing, mobile single measurements

Choosing the Right Lactate Meter

There are four key factors to consider when selecting a lactate meter. First, determine the required sample type, as different systems are designed for capillary blood, whole blood, or both. Next, consider the intended application: while some devices are suitable for individual lactate measurements, others support comprehensive lactate threshold testing for professional performance diagnostics. System compatibility is equally important, as each meter is designed to work exclusively with its corresponding test strips, making the cost and availability of consumables an important long-term consideration. Finally, consider the accessories you require, from data transfer options to transport cases, to ensure the system integrates seamlessly into your clinical or diagnostic workflow.

Manufacturers Available from Praxisdienst

Praxisdienst offers lactate testing systems from leading manufacturers of professional diagnostic equipment. EKF Diagnostics provides the Lactate Scout Sport, part of the comprehensive Lactate Scout system comprising the meter, test strips, and accessories. The device uses enzymatic amperometric technology to measure lactate in capillary blood, delivers results in approximately 10 seconds, and supports both single measurements and step tests, including resting, exercise, and recovery phases with an integrated stopwatch function.

ARKRAY complements the range with the Lactate Pro 2, which measures lactate in whole blood using only a very small sample collected from the fingertip or earlobe. Results are available in around 15 seconds, while onboard memory stores up to 330 test results and USB connectivity enables straightforward data transfer, making the device well suited for both mobile and clinical use.

The range also includes control solutions and compatible system accessories from Roche, allowing healthcare professionals to source lactate meters, consumables, and quality control products from a carefully coordinated product selection.

Frequently Asked Questions about Lactate Meters

A lactate meter measures the concentration of lactate in the blood. Lactate is produced during anaerobic energy metabolism and serves as a marker of the anaerobic threshold. The measured lactate value enables targeted control of exercise intensity and training load in performance diagnostics.

Measurement is performed using an enzymatic amperometric method. An enzyme on the test strip reacts with lactate in the blood sample, and the resulting electrical current is converted into a measurement value. Only a small sample of capillary or whole blood is required, and results are available within approximately 10 to 15 seconds.

Reliability depends on measurement accuracy and system reproducibility. Regular checks using the device-specific control solution, along with properly stored system-specific test strips, are essential for producing reliable results. In sports medicine lactate diagnostics, correct sampling technique and consistent results are more important than individual absolute values.

The most suitable lactate meter depends on the intended application. Key factors include the sample type used, the required measurement scope—from single measurements to full lactate step testing—the system compatibility with test strips, and data management options. For point-of-care testing, a compact device is often sufficient, while performance diagnostics typically require a system with full step test functionality.

Purchase costs vary depending on the device type and features. Compact portable devices are generally more affordable than systems with full step test functionality and advanced data analysis options. In addition, ongoing costs for system-specific test strips should be considered, as the meter and consumables form a matched system.

Buy Lactate Meters at Competitive Prices from Praxisdienst

Customers looking to purchase a lactate meter will find a wide range at Praxisdienst, including devices, system-specific test strips, control and calibration solutions, as well as accessories such as transport cases and USB or Bluetooth data transfer modules. Leading manufacturers such as EKF Diagnostics and ARKRAY are featured alongside compatible consumables, ensuring a complete system offering. The filter function allows products to be compared by manufacturer, product type, variant, and price, making it easy to quickly narrow down the most suitable configuration.

Lactate meters are precise investment devices for medical practices, laboratories, and performance diagnostics centres. Each system consists of the meter and its dedicated test strips, meaning consumable costs are an important factor in long-term planning. The optimal model depends on sample type, measurement scope, and frequency of use. Praxisdienst’s expert customer service team is available to provide personalised advice by phone, email, or live chat.

In addition to the lactate meter range, it is also worth exploring related categories such as laboratory supplies, as well as blood glucose meters and pulse oximeters for point-of-care diagnostics.
