It all started with a paper tube

The History of the Stethoscope

As early as 1816, the French physician René Laennec discovered a method to better auscultate heart and lung sounds. For this, he rolled a long piece of paper into a tube. While placing one end on the patient’s chest, he held the other end to his ear – thus, the stethoscope was invented. He coined the name "stethoscope" from two Greek words: stethos = chest and skopein = to observe/look. Twenty-five years later, New Yorker George P. Cammann designed the first model with two eartips for both ears.

The renowned cardiologist Dr. David Littmann, who was simultaneously a professor at Harvard Medical School and a recognised expert in electrocardiography, had a revolutionary new stethoscope with improved acoustic performance patented in the early 1960s. This marked a milestone in the development of stethoscopes, evolving them from simple listening devices to advanced diagnostic instruments. A few years later, 3M™ acquired the stethoscope company and has since continually developed and refined the designs and existing models. Today, Littmann® is considered one of the leading manufacturers of stethoscopes and is known for its exceptionally high acoustic quality during auscultation.

The anatomy of a Littmann® stethoscope

Open bell

The paediatric side can be converted into a bell. This makes it possible to hear low-frequency sounds.

Chestpiece

The chest piece is a solid precision unit. The hose attached to it can be rotated easily and is therefore very durable.

Dual-Frequency-Membran

By adjusting the pressure, the stethoscope can be used to listen to high and low frequency ranges.

Hose

It can be easily bent without kinking and is resistant to cleaning. No natural rubber latex was used in its manufacture.

Ear Hook

They are adjustable in tension and feature a lightweight, sturdy aluminium alloy. They fit perfectly in the ear canal.

Soft Earplugs

The earplugs are characterised by excellent sealing and a comfortable fit. Even when worn for long periods, they do not cause any discomfort.
