Surgical Instruments in a Procedure-Specific Kit
Since most surgical operations are standard procedures that require the same products, the majority of surgeons simply use pre-packed surgical kits. Such sterile kits only contain disposable equipment and surgical instruments that are disposed of after use. This eliminates the risk of cross-contamination or infectious transmissions. These surgery kits are also packed so that the instruments are removed in the order in which they would be used, optimally supporting a structured medical procedure.
In addition to instruments, such as forceps, dissecting forceps, scissors, scalpels, clamps, needles & needle holders, disposable surgical kits usually also contain medical consumables like swabs, surgical drapes or dressing material. These medical kits have a sterile shelf life of many years and can therefore be economically stored.
