Cryotherapy for the Targeted Freezing of Tissue
Cryotherapy uses extremely low temperatures to treat or destroy targeted tissue. In dermatology, cryosurgery is commonly used to treat a range of superficial skin lesions, including warts, actinic keratoses and certain benign or malignant skin lesions. Depending on the method and equipment used, temperatures can reach approximately -70°C to -200°C.
The controlled application of extreme cold causes cell damage and tissue destruction. The effectiveness of cryotherapy depends on factors such as the temperature reached, exposure time, treatment technique and characteristics of the tissue being treated. Depending on the indication and treatment area, local anaesthesia may or may not be required.
Different types of cryosurgery equipment are available for dermatological applications. The two main techniques are spray cryotherapy and contact cryotherapy.
Contact Cryotherapy
Contact cryotherapy uses a cooled applicator or probe that is placed directly onto the tissue to be treated. Depending on the system, the applicator may be cooled using liquid nitrogen or argon gas.
Systems with interchangeable applicators in different sizes allow the treatment area to be adapted to the individual indication. The direct contact method enables precise application of cold to a defined area and can help limit exposure of the surrounding tissue.
Examples of Cryotherapy Applications
- Actinic keratosis
- Fibromas
- Warts
- Seborrhoeic keratosis
- Hypertrophic scars
- Selected superficial skin tumours
