What is the Praxisdienst Price Index?

As a leading provider of medical supplies, we continuously monitor the development of market prices and sometimes notice considerable price changes. General practitioners usually have no insight into this issue. The perception of changes in the prices of consumables is thus rather subjective.

Since the budgets of general practitioners are generally limited, information on the development of market prices can be helpful when making medical purchasing decisions.

Here we show the index value of the individual category for the current quarter as well as the change compared to the previous quarter.

Basis & Calculation Principle for the Praxisdienst Price Index

Basis:

The Praxisdienst Price Index provides information on the price development of relevant consumables for general practitioners in Germany. The basis is a mixture of automated and manual permanent price monitoring of suppliers for medical consumables in Germany. For this purpose, 10 nationwide suppliers of medical consumables are continuously monitored and the most favourable offer in each case is used as the reference price.

Categories:

The categories are the product groups with the highest turnover, which are paid for by general practitioners in Germany themselves.

Calculation Principle:

The index is composed of 8 equally weighted categories. Each category comprises the items sold most frequently in this category over a period of at least 1 year (top 25 by turnover). In the following quarters, the change to the index is published both for all and for the individual categories in points as well as in percent.

Transparent, Traceable, Independent

We determine an average price per calendar week from the daily lowest market prices. The average price of the corresponding calendar weeks of the respective month thus results in the average price per quarter.

In order to exclude extreme price changes due to exceptional events, such as delivery problems of a manufacturer or strongly increased demand, from influencing the price index too much and giving a distorted picture, the two items in each category with the strongest deviations from the last quarter (positive/negative) are not included in the calculation of the index.

The Praxisdienst price index is based on the first quarter of 2021 with 100 points. In the following quarters, the change to the index is published for all categories as well as for the individual categories.
