It all started with a paper tube
The History of the Stethoscope
As early as 1816, the French doctor Rene Laennec discovered a method for listening to heart and lung sounds. He rolled up a long piece of paper into a tube. While placing one side on the patient's chest, he held the other side to his ear - the stethoscope was invented. He coined the name stethoscope from two Greek words: stethos = chest and skopein = to look at/see. 25 years later, the New Yorker George P. Camman designed the first model with an earpiece for each ear.
The renowned cardiologist Dr David Littmann, who was also a professor at Harvard Medical School and a recognised expert in electrocardiography, first patented a revolutionary new stethoscope with better acoustic performance in the early 1960s. He helped to transform stethoscopes from a simple listening device to an advanced diagnostic tool. A few years later, 3M™ acquired the stethoscope company and has continued to develop and improve on his designs ever since. Today, 3M™ Littmann® is considered one of the most important manufacturers of stethoscopes and stands for particularly high acoustic quality during auscultation.
World Famous Stethoscopes for all your Stethoscope Needs
Discover the extensive 3M™ Littmann® range - Top Class Stethoscopes3M™ Littmann® offers a wide range of stethoscopes to meet your auscultation needs. It is often underestimated how important high acoustic quality is for professional patient care. 3M™ Littmann® stethoscopes offer doctors, nurses and paramedics excellent acoustic performance, consistent high quality, outstanding value and a comfortable fit. With new technologies constantly being developed and improved, they are an investment in clinical skills and patient health. Below we present the different models from the Classic III to the Cardiology IV and explain in detail which Littmann stethoscope will work best for you.
Why should I choose a 3M™ Littmann® stethoscope?
Compared to stethoscopes from other manufacturers, 3M™ Littmann® stethoscopes impress with their exceptional acoustic performance and particularly robust and lightweight design. Especially when listening to heart and lung sounds, but also when auscultating the abdomen, you can learn a lot about a patient's condition in advance. Without excellent acoustic quality, important sounds and thus important clues can be missed. This is how 3M™ Littmann® ensures that medical professionals hear everything their patients can't tell them.
