The Wand STA by Milestone Scientific is a computer-controlled local anaesthesia device that provides low-pain, tissue-sparing and precise anaesthesia, even in hard-to-reach places and areas such as the palate, where the delivery of anaesthetics is often very painful. The first drop of anaesthetic is delivered to the mucous membrane before insertion, so the surface of the tissue is anaesthetised before insertion (surface anaesthesia). As soon as the surface is anaesthetised, a microneedle is used for painless and pressureless anaesthesia. The needle is not inserted as in classical anaesthesia, but is slightly rotated. Thanks to the pre-anaesthesia, the movement is hardly noticed by the patient. This new technology is particularly suitable for children and patients who suffer from needle phobia.
The dosage of the injection can also be controlled individually by means of a foot switch (3 different levels). This leads to a smaller amount of anaesthetic, which has the advantage that the patient does not feel any unpleasant numbness afterwards, as is usually the case after an anaesthetic. Thanks to the DPS technology, the pressure, which is often responsible for the pain, and the perfusion of the anaesthetic are controlled. Acoustic signals and a coloured LED lamp are used to control the exact positioning of the needle.
Another advantage of digital anaesthesia is that, unlike conventional anaesthesia, there is practically no waiting time. Due to the high precision, half the usual amount of anaesthesia is usually sufficient.
