Electrosurgery
Electrosurgery in the Dental Practice
RF devices work with high-frequency alternating current and utilise the thermic effect that occurs during activation within tissue. Electric energy is transformed into thermal energy and frequencies between 300 kHz and 4 mHz are used. The shape and height of the chosen current must be adapted to the type of the tissue on which one is operating. In principle, the lowest possible frequency for the tissue-type should be chosen. This energy (current) is used for cutting, coagulating or even for a combination of the two.
Cutting with RF Devices
The cutting function of RF devices comes into use for removing tissue samples, growths or also for exposing implants or impacted wisdom teeth. For this purpose, a continuous energy flow is created and operated with the lowest possible heat and haemostasis. It is especially important to note when working near bones or periost that no tissue diminution can be tolerated.
Coagulation with the RF Device
Through very slow heating, the tissue is dwindled and the contained liquid vaporised or thickened, respectively. This method of "boiling" is used for conjoining smaller vessels to provide haemostasis.
Combination of Cutting and Coagulating
Some RF devices have a combined cutting/coagulating mode to allow for precise cutting while simultaneously coagulating the cut surface. The coagulation zone is hardly noticeable and disturbances in the primary wound healing process are not expected. This mode is excellent for plastic surgery, for example.
Treatments with Laser Technology
With the laser function, the gingival pockets can be disinfected and cleaned during a periodontal treatment. Prepared root canals can be gently disinfected and the soft tissue can be removed e.g. during implant surgery. The laser modus can be also be used for promoting wound healing, while Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) can be used to achieve pain reduction and desensitisation.
