Gutta Percha
Gutta Percha as an Occlusive Filling Material
Gutta percha is the self-drying, milky sap of the gutta percha tree, which mostly grows on the Malaysian peninsula, as well as Java, Sumatra and Borneo. The material is similar to natural rubber, yet it has a much lower molar mass. The advantage of gutta percha lies in the fact that it is relatively hard at room temperature, but becomes soft and kneadable at around 50°C. This makes it beneficial for use in dentistry.
Gutta percha is, therefore, used as a provisional filling material or as a temporary occlusive material for an inlay or only. The recipe of Hoffmann´s Gutta Percha, for example, is antibacterial, elastic and easy to place in the cavity, thanks to the addition of zinc-oxide and beeswax. As needed, this occlusive material can be removed without drilling. Based on the easy removability, gutta percha can also be used to seal implant screws.
