Retinoscopes for Ophthalmological Examinations
Retinoscopes are used in ophthalmology for testing refraction; mostly in children. Orientation can be done without a cyclopegic exam, although the patient is often unable to accommodate under normal circumstances. The patient's far point is evaluated based on the light movement on the pupil when the examiner turns the retinoscope on the middle axis. If the light movement is contrary to the rotational direction, then the far point of the examined eye is positioned in front of the examiner's eye, which determines myopia. Testing various corrective lenses can balance out the refractive error until concordant light movement is achieved.
Retinoscopy for Diagnosing Astigmatism
In addition to measuring the total refractive capacity of the eye, the retinoscope is also used for diagnosing astigmatism. This ophthalmological examination is based on the principle that reflections of the light ray on the iris and pupil are differently aligned in the presence of an astigmatism. They can only be aligned in two positions that correspond to the main axis of the astigmatisms. The position of these axes is provided by a Tabo scheme.
High-Quality, Name Brand Ophthalmological Diagnostic Devices
Praxisdienst offers you a selection of various, high-quality exam devices. Some of are available as individual devices while others come in ready-to-use diagnostic sets. Illumination can be achieved with halogen and LED technology, although LED illumination, in terms of precision, is much more beneficial for diagnosing astigmatism. The Heine Beta 200 LED retinoscope features practical functionalities, such as a particularly thin light ray and the Parastop function, that support the examiner in precisely diagnosing astigmatisms.
