As with an upper arm blood pressure monitor, measurements with a wrist blood pressure monitor are taken exclusively on bare skin. Measurements taken over clothing are not reliable. 

It is particularly important that blood pressure measurement is taken at mid heart level. The arm with the wrist blood pressure cuff must therefore be raised. Movements during measurement can lead to a falsification of the values. It is therefore optimal if the arm can be supported during measurement so that the wrist remains at heart level. 

According to a report by the German Hypertension League, blood pressure monitors for the wrist perform much better in independent tests than is generally assumed. The measuring accuracy of good devices is comparable to that of upper arm blood pressure monitors, provided that the measurement was carried out correctly.
