Tympanometry is a diagnostic procedure for middle ear analysis in ENT. Middle ear pressure is determined by means of an impedance measurement of the eardrum. The physician is then able to assess the condition of the ossicular chain. Tympanometry is carried out with a tympanometer.
A tympanometer is a diagnostic device for audiometry that consists of a tone generator, a pressure pump and a microphone. The tympanometer measures the acoustic resistance of the eardrum under different pressure conditions.
Conclusions can be drawn about various disorders of the eardrum and middle ear based on changes that occur in the normal curve of the tympanogram due to different pressure ratios.
