Finding the right dermatoscope
In this category you will find a comprehensive selection of different medical dermascopes from well known manufacturers such as HEINE Optotechnik, DermLite, VISIOMED, KaWe and Firefly. The individual dermascopes differ not only in their design, but also in their intended use. Below you will find some important information to help you find the right dermascope to suit your dermatology needs.
Dermatoscopes with Contact Plates
Contact dermascopes have a contact plate that is wetted with immersion fluid and placed directly on the skin to minimise light refraction. This enables examination of deeper layers of the skin. Contact dermoscopy is often used for medical skin cancer screening and is the classic type of dermoscopy. Many contact dermascopes come with a contact plate with scale as an accessory, which can be used to measure moles. At Praxisdienst you can purchase, for example, the LuxaScope CCT or the DermLite DL4 for contact dermoscopy with immersion fluid.
Dermatoscopes for Contactless Examination
Dermascopes for noncontact dermoscopy are equipped with polarised light and thus allow noncontact skin examination without contact fluid. The light reflected from the skin surface is blocked out by a polarisation filter. Under polarised light, various skin lesions, such as crystalline structures in lesions, are more visible. A contact plate is not required with these models. At Praxisdienst we stock, for example, the HEINE NC2 for contactless dermoscopy.
Compact or Flexible?
The distinction between compact dermascopes and dermascope heads is that while the energy source for compact dermascopes is built into the housing, dermascope heads are connected to a battery handle or a charging handle. The advantage of such systems is that the handle can be purchased once and then used with different instrument heads.
These systems are very cost effective, especially for doctors who perform different instrument-based examinations in the course of their work.
Compact dermascopes, on the other hand, are particularly well suited for mobile use and for digital dermoscopy in conjunction with a smartphone or tablet.
At Praxisdienst you will find a wide range of compact pocket dermatoscopes, such as the DermLite DL1, as well as various high-quality dermatoscope heads (for example the HEINE DELTA 20T).
Digital Dermoscopy with Dermatoscope & Smartphone
Digital dermoscopy plays an important role in dermatology and is mainly used for patients in whom conspicuous skin changes need to be observed and documented over time. The documentation of malignant skin changes (skin cancer) before and after an operation can also be implemented very easily with the help of digital dermoscopy.
In addition to a photo of the skin lesion, professional documentation also contains the date of the examination and notes on the symptoms, the initial diagnosis and the how often examinations take place. Ideally, an overview photo is also taken in order to record the exact location of the skin change.
Since documenting with the aid of a digital camera is time consuming, more and more doctors are turning to time-saving and practical smartphone-supported documentation. For this purpose, the dermascope can be connected to a smartphone with the help of a special adapter and the pictures can be taken via the camera of the smartphone. The photos can either be stored and named in the photo gallery or managed with an app. Popular connectable dermascopes include the DermLite DL200 Hybrid, the DermLite Handyscope or the HEINE iC1.
HEINE Dermatoscopes at Praxisdienst
HEINE Optotechnik offers various devices for contact dermatoscopy and contactless examination with polarised light. For example, the HEINE mini 3000 LED dermascope is available for the HEINE mini 3000 system. It is equipped with 10x magnification and extra powerful LED HQ technology. If required, the HEINE mini can be supplemented with a special contact plate that can even be used to examine the spaces between fingers and toes.
The HEINE NC 2 dermatoscope delivers crisp, high quality images and true colour rendition. If required, the NC2 can also be connected to an iPhone or iPod Touch in order to save examination results. Special adapter cases are available for this purpose.
The premium model from HEINE is the DELTA 20T dermascope, which is not only equipped with a toggle function for switching between polarised and non-polarised light, but also with individual focus adjustment and correction compensation. For documentation purposes, the Delta 20T dermatoscope can be connected to various SLR cameras using an adapter. This Delta 20T dermatoscope is supplied with a dermoscopy compendium.
Some factors to consider before buying a dermoscope:
- Do you want to perform digital dermoscopy and document the images?
- How high should the magnification be?
- Which light source do you want to use? (LEDs, for example, are longer-lasting and usually more powerful than halogen lamps)
- Should the dermatoscope have a contactless mode with polarised light?
- Do you need particularly small contact plates to examine hard-to-reach areas of the body?
- Which skin lesions are you going to examine with the device? (e.g. pigmented skin lesions, melanomas, foreign bodies, parasites)
- What colour rendering index do you need?
