ECG Paper for Printing ECG Derivations
ECG paper, also called register paper, is a special thermal paper that is used to print recorded ECG derivations. Typically, ECG paper comes with a grid so as to assist in the interpretation of the ECG curve, without any technical devices. This makes the wave height, width and frequency easy to read and thus, the ECG derivations easy to interpret.
Based on the ECG machine and manufacturer, either roll paper or folded ECG paper will be used. 3-channel ECG machines always use rolls, where as 6-channel ECG machines use folded register paper. Folded register paper is perforated in regular intervals, which allows for a clean tear. On the other hand, roll paper is torn by the cutting edge found directly on the printer. Because ECG paper is thermal paper, it is important that the printout is not exposed to extreme temperatures or moisture. Otherwise, this could lead to discolouration of the register paper and, worst case scenario, the ECG curve will not be readable.
