TENS Machine
The TENS Machine–An Electrical Nerve Stimulation Device
The TENS machine (short for "Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation") is an electric stimulation device that is used for treating chronic pain as well as for muscle relief. The TENS unit emits electrical waves onto the patient's skin, which is often carried out through reusable adhesive electrodes.
During electric stimulation therapy, the afferent nerve pathways of the body are influenced, which should lead to pain superimposition and consequently a hindrance to the pain signals transmitted to the brain as a so-called "Gate Control Mechanism." The electrodes are placed on or near the bodily region that is to be treated and the nerves are stimulated through electrical impulses.
The effectiveness of the TENS unit for pain relief is steeped in controversy since no current studies have provided clear evidence for the effectiveness of the procedure. Nevertheless, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation often finds use in pain relief programmes, as the side effects from using these units are considered valid. The TENS unit finds most of its use in chronic pain therapy to help supplement the other pain treatment methods, e.g., multimodal pain therapy.
TENS Units are Easy to Use
The use of the handy, portable electrical stimulation machine is particularly easy; therefore, the patient can even use the TENS unit at home, following a doctor's or therapist's instructions.
Depending on the manufacturer, the electrical stimulation device usually has pre-set programmes that can be selected based on desired treatment goals. For example, the Omron E4 TENS unit is equipped with 12 special treatment programmes.
The TENS machine is usually operated with common batteries to guarantee maximum flexibility in use. With many devices, the included adhesive electrodes can be washed and reused over a longer period of time.
The TENS Unit is Used for Chronic Pain
One area of application for the TENS unit is pain reduction for chronic pain, such as arthralgia, neuralgia or chronic headaches. Even when treating phantom pains, the TENS unit provides an economical effect. Therefore, this unit is often used in ambulatory or stationary pain therapy.
As a rule, the TENS unit should not be used on patients who are pregnant or who suffer from disorders, such as epilepsy. Likewise, the use of a TENS unit is not recommended for patients with a pacemaker or an implanted defibrillator.
Many TENS Units Also Offer a Massage Function
Many of the TENS units that we offer also offer a massage function to help deal with muscle tension. For this purpose, the electrodes are placed along the tensed muscle area and the desired programme is begun. The procedure causes relaxation and promotes blood circulation to the treated muscle group. Depending on the programme, the TENS unit simulates various massage styles, such as a kneading or pounding massage.
