Hydroactive Wound Treatment

Secondary wound healing refers to wounds that do not heal smoothly. The wound edges cannot simply grow together, which often results in unattractive scars caused by the development of granulation tissue. Secondary wound intention also takes longer to heal, presents a higher risk of infection and is more demanding than primary wound intention.

To support wound healing, medical professionals often use special hydrocolloid or hydrogel dressings to keep the wound moist and prevent infection. These moist dressings are available in various versions to use in every stage of wound healing.

Indications for Moist Wound Care

Moist wound treatment is used for many different types of wounds, such as septic, secondary healing wounds, open soft tissue injuries, open chronic wounds and burn wounds. The hydrogel and hydrocolloid dressings are also useful when treating superficial erosions and puncture wounds.

Advantages of Moist Wound Treatment:

If used correctly, moist wound dressings offer a range of advantages: they create and maintain a moist microclimate, protects the wound from germs and outer moisture, cleans the wound and makes dressing changes atraumatic and less painful. The dressings provide excellent thermal insulation and support immune defence and healing mechanisms. Additionally, they relieve pain and reduce the wound surface.

Wound Dressings for Deep and Exuding Wounds

The Hydrosorb Gel Bandage from Paul Hartmann, for example, does not adhere to the skin, creates a moist wound milieu and supports tissue regeneration. The adhesive Hydrocoll Hydrocolloid Dressing has a similar approach. It absorbs excessive and germ-laden exudate, prevents the granulation tissue from drying out and promotes cell division.

The Lomatuell PRO gel forming mesh contact comes in handy when you need a flexible and conformable dressing that can be cut to size. The net structure allows excess exudate to drain into the secondary dressing, which reduces the risk of the dressing sticking to the wound. For particularly sensitive skin, we offer the Cutimed Siltec foam dressing from BSN. Here, the wound exudate is contained within its foam core, while a silicone film prevents the dressing from adhering to the wound.

Wound Gel for Moistening Dry Wounds

Wound gel, such as the octenilin wound gel keeps wounds moist to support wound healing. By loosening necrotic tissue and removing encrusted wound coverings of chronic wounds, the gel effectively supports wound healing. Additionally, the octenidine gel inactivates germs to clean the wound.

In general, wound gel is odourless, dye-free and has a soothing effect without being sensitising. The Hydrosorb Gel from Hartmann is particularly easy to dose and apply, due to its handy dosing syringe.
