Plaster Casts for Making Plaster Splints & Bandages

Ready-to dip plaster bandages, such as the Cellona plaster casts from Lohmann-Rauscher, are used in the surgery or hospital to make individual plaster casts or plaster splints. The plaster bandage or plaster roll is a gauze bandage with a plaster mass.  Casts made with plaster bandages are suitable, for example, for immobilising fractures or joint lesions to allow the injury to heal. The plaster casts available from us can be modelled particularly well and are characterised by a short setting time and fine creamy plaster application. We offer various accessories for our plaster bandages, including walking heels, which can be easily integrated into the plaster cast. The heels make walking with the plaster cast easier by acting as a rolling aid and providing additional cushioning when the walking cast is put on. In addition, we offer abrasion-resistant and shock-absorbing shoecasts for plaster and cast bandages, which enable physiologically correct movement in the bandage.

Cellona Plaster Casts

Cellona plaster casts from Lohmann-Rauscher are made of a cotton gauze fabric, offer rapid moisture penetration and are easy and fine to apply and model. This makes it easy to adjust to the arm or leg before curing has set in.

One pack contains 10 individually wrapped rolls, each 2 metres long. There is a choice of different widths depending on what the flexible plaster casts are to be used for and the size required.

Plaster Casts are Easy to Apply

Modern plaster casts are ready-to-dip and moisten quickly and evenly on contact with water, so that they can be processed directly. One advantage is the excellent mouldability of the bandage in a moist, fine-cream state, so that even complex plaster casts can be reliably applied. Depending on the brand and manufacturer, the plaster is ready for transport after about 30 minutes and fully dry after about 12 to 24 hours.

Padded or Unpadded Plaster Cast?

Provided that there is no longer any tendency for swelling, most recommend a plaster cast without cushioning cotton wool or cellulose, as the affected area is better immobilised in this case. However, padding is always applied at the edges and at the points of bony prominences to avoid pain and to protect the skin and nerves.

What do I have to Pay Attention to with a Plaster Cast?

The most important rule when applying the plaster cast is that the two joints adjacent to the injury must always be included in the plaster cast in a functional position. Exceptions are fractures of the distal radius and the upper ankle joint. To avoid pressure points and pain, the attending doctor should always hold the dressing with the flat of the hand and mould it in place. In addition, the plaster cast should be labelled and changed once the swelling has subsided.
