Skin Glue: Medical Glue for Wound Closure
Skin glue provides an alternative to classic wound care with surgical suture and is used for wound closure in cuts, minor wounds and lacerations with jagged wound edges, to secure stitches and for other indications, like sclerotherapy.
Skin Glue for Pain-Free Wound Closure
Medical skin glue is applied without patient discomfort, which makes it ideal for use in children and adults. The skin adhesive is generally applied directly to the wound with help of sterile plastic applicators. Wound closure happens quickly - depending on the product, the glue takes between a few seconds and minutes to dry.
For particularly quick wound closure, we recommend the Histoacryl tissue adhesive from B. Braun. The liquid skin adhesive consists of a monomer (n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate) that polymerises with the tissue fluid within 10 seconds. Additionally, the adhesive creates a protective barrier on the skin to prevent bacterial contamination and infections.
Moreover, Praxisdienst offers the Dermabond mini topical skin adhesive from Ethicon. The adhesive is applied directly to the skin with the ampoule and guarantees a secure adaption of the wound edges. Since the medical adhesive adjusts to the skin's movements, there is no need to use additional dressing materials. However, we recommend the application of additional layers to improve the stability and flexibility of the protective layer.
In general, one should always be careful to only apply the glue to clean wounds that have stopped bleeding. This reduces the risk of germs interfering with wound healing. In addition, possible contraindications such as the use of medications that influence blood clotting or known intolerances to the ingredients must be taken into account when using skin glue.
Wound Closure and Haemostasis
For quick haemostasis, Praxisdienst offers medical supplies like the SMI Spon gelatine sponge. The sponge can be cut to size, which makes it particularly flexible for use. Additionally, the biodegradable material of the gelatine sponge is absorbed by the body within a few weeks. This means that no follow-up surgery is needed to remove the material at a later date.
