Steri-strips, also known as skin closure strips or wound closure strips, are used to seal smaller wounds. Wound closure with steri-strips is the primary treatment option for such wounds, as oppsed to using unnecessary surgical suture. One large advantage to using wound closure strips is the low risk of infection. Whereas surgical suture creates new wounds, steri-strips do not. The risk of infection with surgical suture comes from the open stitch holes, which is completely eliminated with wound closure strips.
The use of steri-strips is typically painfree and can be carried out without local numbing. In order to prevent skin irritation, wound closure strips are made with a skin-friendly material and are coated with a well-wearing adhesive, such as acrylate glue. Steri-strips are non-penetrable by air and can easily remain on the wound for multiple days at a time.
For wounds in cosmetically demanding regions, such as the face, wound closure strips are often the treatment of choice, so as to allow for unobtrusive scars and to prevent the congruent stitch related scars, stemming from suture.
Steri-strips are easy to manipulate and can be sterile stored over a long period of time; they are also perfect for filling doctor and emergency bags.
