Pulse Oximetry
Pulse oximetry is a non-invasive and painless method to monitor the oxygen level of the blood (SpO2). The pulse oximeters in our medical supplies shop come either as a small unit with a built-in finger clip, or a small handheld device that has a sensor that can attach or be applied to the finger.
Comparison of Oximeters
Finger Pulse Oximeters | Handheld Pulse Oximeters | |
Area of Application | Rescue service, sport (e.g. mountaineering, sport flying) | Ambulance service, emergency medicine, neonatology, sleep medicine, anaesthesia |
Application | Spot-check measurement | Spot-check measurement, continuous monitoring |
Patient Groups | Adults, adolescents, children if applicable | Depending on the sensor used, adults, adolescents, children, babies and premature babies |
Alarm | Mostly pre-set, adjustable depending on model | Alarm limits and alarm volume can be individually adjusted |
Sensors | Fixed sensor | Different sensors available - both disposable and reusable with most manufacturers |
Hygiene | Limited cleaning/disinfection due to compact design | Easy cleaning due to removable sensors. For many models, particularly hygienic disposable sensors are also compatible |
Data Storage | Usually no internal memory available | Mostly equipped with large internal memory. The data can often be transferred to the practice PC |
Finger Pulse Oximeters
The BEURER PO 80 for the determination of the amount of oxygen in the blood in adults is a particularly suitable oximeter for the homecare sector. To guarantee good readability from every side, the display automatically adjusts to the positioning of the finger. The oximeter features a graphic pulse display and is equipped with a USB connection so that measured values can be transferred to a PC and evaluated there with the help of free software.
The Rossmax SB200 Finger Pulse Oximeter for determination of oxygen saturation and pulse frequency clearly stands out from other products in its class. Its APG index measurement function allows the arteriosclerosis status to be determined. By measuring the blood flow velocity, it is possible to assess the elasticity of the vessel walls. This procedure provides important information about the presence and degree of arteriosclerosis. The delivery includes batteries and the user manual.
The Onyx Vantage 9590 from Nonin is specially designed for spot-check measurements in medical practices, nursing or emergency services. The shockproof and splash-proof device with LED display can also be used on outdoor missions in emergency medicine and is particularly energy-effecient with up to 36 hours of continuous operation on one battery charge. The device can be adapted to different finger sizes for carrying out hassle-free pulse oximetry.
Handheld Pulse Oximeters
The UT 100 model from Utech Co to measure oxygen and pulse rates in adults, children and newborns is characterised by its large, easy-to-read and illuminated colour display. It displays oxygen saturation and pulse rate, as well as the perfusion index and patient information. The alarm limits are individually adjustable and the various alarms in case of low battery charge or fallen sensor provide a high degree of safety in patient monitoring. The delivery of the pulse oximeter includes a selection of handy accessories. The device allows 20 hours of operation with fully charged batteries, allowing one to monitor the patient over a longer time frame. Order yours at Praxisdienst today.
An example of a device with a very good price-performance ratio is the BT-710 from Bistos. Using an SD card, data from the internal memory can be quickly and easily transferred to a PC. The oxygen saturation, the pulse rate and the perfusion index, as well as the waveform are clearly displayed on the modern colour touch screen. A wide range of disposable and reusable SpO2 sensors and other accessories are available for this compact, lightweight unit for pulse oximetry.
The Nellcor PM10N handheld pulse oximeter from Covidien is used to monitor patients in hospital, medical care facilities and during patient transportation. Its advanced signal processing technology delivers accurate readings even in particularly challenging monitoring situations. With its sleep mode and 80 hours of data storage capacity, the pulse oximeter can also be used for sleep monitoring. SpO2 and pulse rate values can be monitored in real-time. All Nellcor sensors with OxiMax technology are compatible, so the device can be used for all patient groups for performing pulse oximetry.
Measuring in Children
Generally, handheld pulse oximeters with exchangeable sensors are best suited for use in paediatrics and neonatology. These devices can be fitted with a suitable sensor and also offer a higher level of hygiene, better customisability of the alarms and usually also the possibility of data transfer to a PC. We particularly recommend the PalmSAT from Nonin and the compatible sensor.
Devices for Sleep Measurement
We also stock special pulse oximeters, such as wrist pulse oximeters, for measuring oxygen saturation during sleep to exclude sleep apnoea. These devices can be attached to the wrist and are equipped with a finger sensor with a short cable so that the patient does not lose the device and the sensor during the night. Alternatively, handheld pulse oximeters with a special sleep function (such as the Nellcor PM10N) can be used.
