Defibrillators
Save Lives with the Layman Defibrillator
Sudden cardiac arrest is a very common cause of death. In most cases, death is caused by severe ventricular tachycardia that turns into ventricular fibrillation and reduces the pumping function of the heart to such an extend that it leads to a circulatory arrest. Defibrillation is the most effective way to end this condition and to restore normal impulse generation and transmission in the heart muscle. It can be carried out with a classic, manual or semi-automatic defibrillator.
Why Semi-Automatic Defibrillators?
A semi-automatic defibrillator is a device that is able to decide whether a patient needs a life-saving electric impulse to stop life-threatening cardiac arrhythmia and prevent cardiac arrest. As soon as its electrodes or pads have been placed on the patient, the automated external defibrillator (AED) measures the ECG. This analysis provides the user with a recommendation on how to proceed. Either the defibrillator recommends chest compressions and resuscitation or the use of electric shocks.
To ensure that electrical shocks are only delivered when they are medically required, the button for shock administration of a semi-automatic defibrillator is only activated when the ECG shows the appropriate curve. This measure guarantees a high level of patient safety and the rescuer can be sure that he isn't accidentally hurting the patient.
In contrast to manual defibrillators that are only suited for use by doctors, semi-automatic devices can also be used by first responders without any medical training. This can save a lot of time during emergencies and the chance of survival increases significantly. With a layman defibrillator, everyone can save lives!
What Types of Defibrillators Exist and Which Device Should I Choose?
If you want to buy an AED, you should first consider where the machine should be used and by whom. If it is to be used by amateurs in out-of-hospital situations, we recommend a defibrillator with an interactive display. This kind of defibrillator safely guides the user through the reanimation process with help of short instruction videos. AEDs with interactive display are particularly suited to insecure users who are scared to make a mistake during reanimation. Additionally, there are automatic defibrillators with automatic shock function. With them, the bystander only has to place the electrodes and perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), if needed. The automatic AED takes care of everything else.
If the defibrillator is used by amateurs and trained professionals alike, you may order a classic, semi-automatic defibrillator. These defibrillators are designed to be operated by both types of users without any problems.
AEDs that are intended for use by doctors are generally labelled as "professional" devices and are equipped with additional features that can only be used by doctors. Displayed ECG readings, for example, can help the medical professional to assess the patient's state.
For public spaces, companies, train stations, airports and other public facilities, we suggest the use of an amateur defibrillator that is easy to operate and has a robust and durable housing. This is necessary for multiple reasons. First of all, the probability that the public access defibrillator will be used more than once over the years is much higher than with an AED that is kept in an opththalmic surgery, for example. Secondly, the fact that the defibrillator is publicly accessible means that it can be removed from its wall cabinet and used for mischief. For this reason, many AED cabinets are equipped with an alarm that is automatically triggered when the device is removed.
Devices that are more prone to damages, such as defibrillators with display should, therefore, be used in spaces where they can be observed, e.g. in office spaces.
