Surgical Lamps
Surgical Lamps for Surgical Operations
Surgical lamps are characterised by their high performance and large area of illumination. They are mostly used in operating theatres, but can also find application for smaller surgical procedures, such as in ambulatory or dermatological areas.
Proper Lighting for the Operating Theatre
Surgical lamps designed for use in the operating theatre offer particularly high power as compared to most examination lights. This is because the surgeon requires excellent illumination and an optimally lit operating area.
LEDs with up to 160,000 Lux are typically used and the illumination level that is actually applied depends on the desired diameter of the illuminated operating area as well as the distance from the operating field.
In order to achieve sufficient lighting conditions, any possible shadows caused by the operating team must be prevented. This is achieved in operating theatres, using multiple lighting elements.
Depending on the model and version, the surgical lamps can either be designed for wall-mounting, ceiling mounting or on a mobile stand for flexible positioning.
Increased Patient Safety via LED Surgical Lamps
Due to the high light output, many lighting elements develop relatively high warmth output. This can represent a safety risk, as the tissue can dry out and the air flow in the protected area can be disturbed, which is planned to provide germ-free air surrounding the operating table and instrument table.
This risk is minimised with the application of LED technology. Lighting with LED produces nearly no own warmth and does not emit warming infrared or UV rays. Furthermore, LEDs are exceptionally economical, as the exhibit a longer lifespan than other light sources, such as halogen lamps, making them very energy efficient.
Things to Note when Buying a Surgical Lamp
In addition to the illumination strength, lighting and warmth development, the colour temperature is another important criteria to note when selecting the proper surgical lamp.
A true-colour tissue representation is equally as helpful for the surgeon when performing smaller operations, such as removing smaller skin tumours, as well as larger operations.
The closer the LED colour temperature is to the colour temperature of sunlight, the more accurate the tissue is represented; thus, easing the operation for the surgeon.
The operability of the lamps is also worth noting. There are lamps with touch-free operation available for hygienically demanding areas, such as quarantine units or operating theatres, which not only allow for touch-free power control, but also for light intensity regulation–for example, the GS 900 surgical lamp from Welch Allyn.
