Shower Seats
Shower Seats for Washing Patients
Shower seats are important aids in nursing professions and are used to give patients with limited mobility the ability to wash themselves in the shower. Depending on the severity of the limitation, the shower seat can either be used by the patient, alone, or with the help of a nurse who uses the shower seat as a support when washing a patient in the shower.
Generally, there are two different types of shower seats: Shower stools and shower chairs.
The Shower Stool
A shower stool consists of a seat and three or four stable legs. Most shower stools are height adjustable with only a few hand motions so that they can be adjusted to the patients' height. In order to ensure that the shower stool does not slip away under the weight of the patient on the wet bath tub, the feet on the shower stool are equipped with slip-preventing caps. Most of these slip-preventing feet a bit thicker to cover a wider standing surface.
Shower stools are ideal for small baths with smaller bath tubs. They do not take up much space and can often even by disassembled in a few short steps, saving storage space in a cabinet.
Shower Seat with Backrest: The Shower Chair
Unlike the shower stool, the shower chair is equipped with a backrest and armrests. This makes the shower chair more comfortable, while offering more stability and support; better for patients with extremely limited mobility. In order to ensure that the shower water flows through, the seat surfaces on shower chairs often have small holes in them.
This greatly reduces the risk of slipping when standing up from the shower chair. The armrests simplify standing up and sitting down in the shower chair, since the patient can easily hold onto them with both hands. Shower chairs are typically bigger than shower stools and should, therefore, be used in more spacious bathrooms.
As a rule, it is important to note if there is enough space in your bathtub for a shower chair or shower stool. If the shower seat is not stable in the tub, then it could slip away under the patient's weight, which can lead to serious injuries. The bathtub should, therefore, be measured and the dimensions compared with the shower seat before purchasing.
Furthermore, the weight and body type of the patient should be kept in mind. Even shower chairs have a maximum load capacity and the seat surface dimensions are usually designed for average-weight patients. There are special XXL shower seats available for obese patients.
