Skin Care for Medical Professionals

The hands of doctors, nurses and other members of the medical profession are exposed to great stress through frequent hand washing and hand disinfection. Skin diseases are among the most common occupational diseases, especially in the nursing profession.

The problem is twofold; not only is skin disease a very unpleasant affliction, there is also an increased risk of infection transmission. If the skin is damaged and has cracks, for example, germs can settle and multiply in these damaged areas. Such areas are difficult to access with disinfectants - the effectiveness of hand disinfection is thus severely limited. This increases the risk of infection transmission. 

To prevent this, and dry skin generally, regular skincare with clinical skincare products is very important - both for the health of medical staff and for breaking chains of infection.

Ointments are anhydrous preparations made from a hydrophobic or hydrophilic base. They supply fat to the skin and serve to protect and care for the skin. 

Creams consist of an aqueous and an oily/greasy component. The most important distinction is in the structure: O/W (oil-in-water emulsion) can be washed off with water, whereas W/O (water-in-oil emulsion) cannot be washed off with water. 

Lotions are mostly liquid-aqueous preparations - similar to creams, but with a higher water content.
