Disinfecting Hands for Surgical Procedures
This video clearly explains the proper procedure for surgical hand disinfection.
Disinfectants for the General Practice, Surgery, Hospital & Lab
A disinfectant is a chemical substance used to inactivate or destroy microorganisms on inert surfaces. Disinfectants for cleaning surfaces are an important means of pathogen control within the healthcare sector, e.g. hospital disinfectants for use in hospitals, as cleaning alone only removes visible dirt and germs from surfaces. To effectively disinfect an area, e.g. with bleach, you have to remove the dirt and debris from a surface first. Hospital disinfectants and other disinfectants which contain, e.g. alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, are used for cleaning, preventing infectious transmissions and for providing infection prevention in general practices, laboratories and hospital rooms.
Because pathogens, e.g. a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease, can survive for months on various surfaces, it is important to carry out regular cleaning and disinfection to effectively remove and kill any pathogens.
The disinfectant kills potential pathogenic germs like viruses, fungi, bacteria and bacteria spores to stop them from spreading in healthcare-associated settings ensuring the health and safety of patients and staff alike. Correctly performed disinfection reduces the risk of germs and prevents the transmission of infections, thus contributing greatly to the maintenance of practice and hospital hygiene.
We stock an extensive selection of disinfectants for a range of applications, such as hand disinfection, surface disinfection, instrument disinfection and skin disinfection. Here is an overview of the different preparations and their application. You are guaranteed to find the right disinfectant to suit your needs at Praxisdienst.
Surface Disinfectants
Germs can settle on surfaces through moisture in the air or through direct contact. The germ count can only be reduced by consequential use of disinfectants as they provide simple, safe removal of microorganisms, e.g. a bacterium or virus.
Surface disinfectants are available with different active ingredients. They differ not only in their spectrum of activity, but also in their material compatibility. When buying a surface disinfectant, it is therefore essential to make sure that the preparation is suitable for the surface to be disinfected.
Popular active ingredients are alcohol, quaternary ammonium compounds, active oxygen, active hydrogen peroxide, hydrogen peroxide and organic acids. Aldehydes are used rarely.
The most effective kind of surface decontamination is performed by wiping it with an appropriate surface disinfectant like Bacillol, Microbac, Desomed or Kohrsolin.
As an alternative to ready-to-use rapid disinfectant or an economical concentrate, disinfecting wipes are becoming increasingly popular. Ready-to-use disinfectant wipes are not only very practical, but also time-saving and can be used on the go. They can also be used to disinfect smaller surfaces without having to prepare a disinfectant solution directly.
It is recommended that users wear protective gloves when using surface disinfectants to protect their skin.
Instrument Disinfectants
Disinfection of medical instruments is carried out before cleaning and sterilisation in order to protect staff during reprocessing. Disinfected instruments can be cleaned more safely, as the risk of infection transmission is greatly reduced by prior disinfection.
As a rule, instruments are placed in an immersion bath directly after use, but one can also use a thermal disinfector, which cleans and disinfects instruments automatically.
Instrument disinfectants are almost always available as a concentrate that is used to prepare an aqueous solution. Care should be taken to ensure that the water used is not at a high temperature so that no harmful vapours are produced.
When instruments are reprocessed manually in an immersion bath, the solution must usually be renewed every working day, or at the latest when the instruments are visibly soiled.
We offer a wide range of products for instrument disinfection.
Hand Sanitisers
Disinfecting hands with a suitable hand sanitiser not only protects the user, but also the patient from infection. Depending on the medical field and facility, a hand sanitiser needs to be effective against specific bacteria, germs and viruses.
A typical hand disinfectant is at least bactericidal, mostly fungicidal and either limited virucidal or virucidal. For some time now, there has been a new efficacy spectrum called limited virucidal plus. Products that correspond to this spectrum of efficacy inactivate not only all enveloped viruses, but also some non-enveloped viruses that are often responsible for outbreaks in hospitals and care facilities.
All hand disinfectants that are either limited virucidal, virucidal or limited virucidal plus are effective against the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2.
In some fields, like general medicine and paediatrics, germs play an important role as many patients entering the practice carry infectious diseases. In other disciplines, e.g. neurology, disinfection plays a subordinate role. As a result, medical professionals should use hand sanitisers with a standard or an extended efficacy spectrum. For infection control in nursing homes and other facilities in which many people live together in close quarters, particular emphasis should be placed on hand sanitisers that are effective against the norovirus and other rapidly transmissible germs.
Antibacterial hand sanitisers, such as the Sterillium hand sanitiser, can be purchased from our online shop, alongside wipes like the Preven's Paris Antiseptic Wipes. We offer you a wide range of preparations for hygienic hand disinfection and surgical hand disinfection. To keep hand sanitisers from drying out the hands, you can use small amounts of special moisturising products like the Baktolan medical skin care balm.
Skin Disinfection
In order to prevent germs from penetrating a wound, the skin is disinfected prior to invasive operations, punctures, injections and blood drawing. To prevent surgical site infections and bloodstream infections, the skin disinfectant is sprayed onto the skin or can be applied with a swab. To ensure safe disinfection, make sure that the skin disinfectant is left to act for a sufficient time. Especially on skin rich in sebaceous glands, the disinfectant needs a longer time to take effect.
We sell a large selection of disinfectants to guarantee patient safety, including products like Cutasept from Bode or Octenisept from Schülke & Mayr.
