Surface Disinfectants
Surface Disinfectants for Professional Surface Disinfection
A disinfectant is a chemical substance used to inactivate or destroy microorganisms on inert surfaces. Disinfectants for cleaning surfaces are an important means of pathogen control within the healthcare sector, whether for hospital disinfection or in the lab or medical practice. Because pathogens, e.g. a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease, can survive for months on various surfaces, it is important to carry out regular disinfection in order to prevent germ transmission to the personnel or patients in hospitals and medical practices. Surfaces that are regularly touched by many people, such as door handles or light switches, are the most contaminated with microorganisms and can lead to the transmission of infectious diseases. Surface disinfection is done with the help of special surface sanitisers or disinfectant cleaners which can contain varying ingredients, e.g. hydrogen peroxide, accelerated hydrogen peroxide or alcohol.
As a rule, these sanitisers for surfaces are bactericidal, virucidal and fungicidal. Depending on requirements, they can either come as a ready-made disinfectant or concentrate for individually creating the solution. Whereas surface sanitisers used to contain aldehyde and were therefore hazardous to health, nowadays sanitisers are mainly aldehyde-free.
In recent years, disinfecting wipes have become increasingly popular, as they provide simple, safe removal of microorganisms, e.g. a bacterium or virus. One differentiates between ready-made disinfecting wipes that are already soaked with a surface sanitiser and wipes systems that are soaked by the user with a suitable solution.
Ready-Made Surface Disinfectants & Concentrates
Whether spray or wipe disinfection is carried out depends on the size and accessibility of the surface to be disinfected. Many disinfectants that are meant for treating surfaces can be used for quick sanitising, based on their short exposure times. The frequency of surface disinfection depends on the risk of infection and can vary from room to room.
Treatment rooms where dressings are changed, for example, require disinfection more often than consultation rooms where no treatments are carried out. In order to achieve effective germ reduction, it is important to read the instructions for use of the surface disinfectant carefully. The required exposure time must be precisely observed, especially for spray or wipe disinfection, in order to reliably kill germs and so as not to provoke development of a resistance.
Selection Criteria
- Odour - when disinfecting between patients, a disinfectant with a subtle odour should be used so that the room does not need to be aired
- Spectrum of efficacy - areas seeing close, consistent patient contact should be cleaned with a surface disinfectant that has the widest possible spectrum of efficacy and a high virus efficacy, e.g. in infant wards or intensive care stations
- Material compatibility - not every disinfectant for surfaces may be used with every material. For example, alcohol-sensitive surfaces like acrylic glass can be treated with a quaternary ammonium compound-based disinfectant
- Application method - for easy to reach surfaces (e.g. exam tables), wipe disinfection is recommended, whereas spray disinfectants are suited for difficult-to-reach places
Surface Disinfecting Wipes as an Alternative to Disinfectants
Quick disinfection of medical products using ready-made disinfecting wipes is becoming increasingly popular in general practices and therapy offices. These disinfecting wipes are soaked with a disinfectant for surfaces and can be removed from a dispenser box, as needed. By using practical disinfecting wipes, it is no longer necessary to create a disinfectant solution. The dispensers have an air-tight-sealing lid that keeps the wipes from drying out, even over a longer timeframe. Many manufacturers offer systems that consist of a refillable dispenser and refillable wipes that can be soaked with a suitable disinfectant for surfaces or disinfectant cleaner.
