Liniments & Embrocations
Liniments for Various Applications
Medical liniment like the Esemtan Active Gel from Schülke is often performed in older patients to stimulate respiration and promote blood circulation. It relaxes muscles and helps with tension and heavy legs, soothes and dissolves cramps and has a cooling effect. However, liniments can also be used for post-treatment after massages or following sports or physical activities. Embrocation can be done with varying ointments. Alcohol-based rubs are often used due to their refreshing and cooling effect. This preparation is often offset with essential oils like lavender oil, citrus oil, mint oil or arnica oil.
A Variety of Liniment Rubs
Respiration-stimulating liniment is often used in nursing facilities and serves as respiratory therapy, as well as to relax, increase well-being, to relieve and to promote sleep. Special agents are rubbed on the skin with rhythmic movements. Respiration stimulating liniment belongs to the practice of basal stimulation and is often used to support the weaning of respirators and breathing equipment in patients with respiratory conditions.
Another form of embrocation is rhythmical liniment. It can be performed on various parts of the body, e.g. the chest, to relieve pain and support the healing process. It can also help with pain relief in arthritis, sore muscles, sprains and other aches. Rhythmic rubbing stimulates blood circulation of the skin and promotes the bond between practitioner and patient.
Like respiration-stimulating liniment, somatic stimulation by touch is frequently used in patient care. Rhythmically applying oils and ointments is generally perceived as soothing and relaxing.
The Effect of Embrocation
Massaging the skin with special cool alcohol-based liniments activates blood circulation of the skin. The treatment loosens the muscles and tissue, which is why it is particularly popular for use after physical activity. Due to ingredients like alcohol, cooling agents, oils and extracts, the products also have a refreshing effect.
