Infusion Solutions
Infusion Solutions for Medical Use
Infusions are used for different purposes in health care. They often serve as a carrier medium to administer medication intravenously or subcutaneously to the patient and for rehydration.
In the case of moderate blood loss or insufficient intake of water, infusions are used as volume therapy to improve plasma volume as well as for rehydration.
Depending on the indication, different intravenous fluids are administered, which differ in their composition of minerals, sodium chloride, and dextrose.
Infusion Solutions at Praxisdienst
One of the best-known fluids for IV infusion therapy is isotonic saline solution (NaCl), which has the same osmotic pressure as human blood. It is suitable as a carrier medium for intravenous and subcutaneous administration of medication straight to the vein in the form of an infusion. In addition, normal saline solution is often used to irrigate venous accesses and wounds and to prevent dehydration.
At Praxisdienst you will find the isotonic saline solution 0,9 % from the manufacturer B. Braun. This saline solution is provided in an ecoflac Plus PE bottle and is available in various sizes, either 500 ml or 1000 ml. The eco-friendly B.Braun Ecoflac bottle can be attached to all common infusion stands.
Ringer's solution is also part of the daily practice requirement due to its comprehensive application possibilities. It has electrolytes (sodium, potassium, and calcium chloride), much like human blood plasma, but has more chloride ions.
In our shop we offer the Fresenius Ringer's solution Kabi in a freeflex bag or as a Kabi Pack of 500 ml. It is often administered as an intravenous infusion to patients with a low blood volume but is also used to clean wounds.
In addition to the conventional Ringer's infusion solution, you will also find Ringer's acetate and Ringer's lactate in 500 ml PE bottles in this category. Due to the anions (acetate and lactate, respectively), the two solutions have a lower proportion of chloride ions, but also contain a similar electrolyte composition to human blood plasma.
Another classic infusion solution is the glucose solution. The glucose 5 solution from Serumwerk Bernburg, for example, is also suitable as a carrier solution for compatible electrolyte concentrates and medicines but is primarily administered as an infusion in the context of parenteral nutrition or in case of hypoglycaemia, because a dose of 500 ml of the hypotonic infusion solution has a calorific value of 850 kJ/l (200 kcal/l).
Doctors use colloidal infusion solutions, among other things, as a treatment of major blood loss and for hydration. Within the framework of IV infusion therapy, they cause stabilisation and increase in volume in the blood vessels. In our shop you will find Gelafundin ISO 40 mg/ml from B. Braun Melsungen AG in a practical storage box with 10 bottles of 500 ml each. It contains 40 g gelatin polysuccinate and is ideal as a colloidal alternative for infusion solutions containing HES.
