Sharps Bins
Sharps Bins for Injury & Infection Protection
In medical practices and hospitals, sharp and pointed materials are used every day. These must be disposed of safely afterwards, as this medical waste poses a high potential for injury and infection to both the medical staff as well as the cleaning staff.
Sharps bins, also known as sharps containers or sharps disposal bins, are used for safe and hygienic disposal of used needles, sharp scalpels, broken ampoules, IV cannulas and other accessories for injections and infusions. Due to their striking yellow colour and red or white lid, the sharps containers are clearly recognisable as such.
Requirements for Sharps Bins
Medical waste containers for the disposal of hypodermic needles, disposable instruments and opened ampoules made of glass, should comply with the requirements of DIN EN ISO 23907 to ensure the safe disposal of waste in the healthcare sector.
The sharps containers are usually made of polypropylene. This plastic is not only extremely hard and therefore puncture-proof, but also withstands above-average heat or cold without breaking.
For medical practices that also need to dispose of bulkier items, such as syringes with attached cannula or medical instruments, sharps containers with a larger opening are suitable. Sharps containers must be safe, odourless and liquid-tight in order to protect staff from infections and injuries.
Sharps Bins in every Size for every Need
Sharps containers are available with differing volumes. Smaller bins are perfect for house calls and other mobile uses. With their 200 ml capacity and slim design, they fit into practically every doctor's bag and are ideal for sharps disposal on the go.
Medical practices and hospitals that have a larger volume of waste with increased injury potential usually use disposal containers with larger capacities of 1 litre to 50 litres. Such needle boxes are stackable when empty and thus take up hardly any storage space.
Containers for Medical Waste Disposal
Consumables such as gloves, swabs or plasters contaminated with blood or wound secretions must also be disposed of correctly in a disposal box to reduce the risk of infection to staff. Containers suitable for this purpose are made of cardboard and are lined on the inside with a high-density polyethylene film. This special film prevents waste liquids from seeping through. The cardboard boxes are foldable and can thus be stored in a particularly space-saving manner.
Cardboard clinical waste boxes should not be used for the disposal of sharp objects due to the low puncture protection.

Various practical insertion inlets on the lid aid in the removing of cannulas with Luer and Luer-Lock attachments, as well as in removing insulin cannulas from syringes, which provides increased security for staff.
