IV Catheter
IV Catheters & Mandrins for Infusion Therapy
The IV catheter is often also referred to as a peripheral venous catheter or indwelling venous catheter and is used for longer-term venipuncture, for example as part of infusion therapy. The IV cannula contains a metal cannula surrounded by a plastic catheter (e.g. made of FEP or PU). During the insertion, the metal cannula is pulled out and the plastic catheter remains in the vein for a longer puncture of up to several days. After interrupting the injection or infusion, the IV catheter can be closed easily and safely in the meantime with a suitable stylet.
IV Catheters & Safety IV Catheters
The Vasofix Braunüle IV catheter from B. Braun is particularly popular for puncture. It has excellent puncture properties due to the atraumatic needle tip with 3-facet ground geometry and the FEP cannula enables vein-friendly placement. Thanks to four embedded X-ray contrast strips, it can also be easily identified on an X-ray image. Furthermore, the cannula with Luer lock attachment features an injection port through which intravenous medication and fluids can be administered if required. The IV needle is supplied in a packaging unit of one piece.
Additional safety is provided by the B. Braun Vasofix Safety IV catheter. The Safety Braunüle is equipped with a safety clip that secures the needle tip immediately after it is pulled out, thus preventing needlestick injuries. The Safety catheter is completely PVC-free and has an injection port as well as an additional hydrophobic blood catcher plug through which the first backflow of blood can be easily detected when puncturing the patient.
Stylet for Closing the Catheter Lumen
A stylet is inserted into the cannula opening after the infusion to keep the catheter open and prevent blood clots from blocking the vein. The access can thus be used again at a later point in time.
For closing the Braun tube and the Safety Braun tube, you can purchase the matching Vasofix mandrin from B. Braun Melsungen AG at a reasonable price. It is colour-coded and available in various sizes (e.g. pink, green, grey and blue). The stylet consists of a thin plastic mandrel which is attached to a cap. A secure Luer-Lock connection between mandrin and cannula reliably prevents ingress of air. The B.Braun mandrin is supplied in a packaging unit of one piece.
