IV Catheters & Stylets for Infusion Therapy
TheIV catheter, also known as a peripheral venous catheter or indwelling venous catheter, is used for long-term venipuncture. The cannula is used, for instance, in the context of emergency treatments or infusion therapy. During infusions, the peripheral venous catheter is the access to the vein of the patient and at the same time the connection to the infusion set. After interrupting the infusion, the cannula is easily and safely closed with a stylet.
IV Catheters for Safe and Long-Term Punctures
IV catheters consist of ametal cannula surrounded by a plastic catheter (e.g. made of FEP or PU). During the puncture, the plastic catheter remains in the vein after the metal cannula has been pulled out, allowing for longer-term venipuncture over the course of a few days. To ensure that they can be connected to the infusion set without any problems, they also have a Luer lock connector, which is often just referred to as a lock connector.
The latex-free Vasofix Braunüle from B. Braun is particularly popular for puncture. This catheter has excellent puncture properties due to the atraumatic cannula tip with 3-facet bevel cut and enables vein-friendly placement due to the FEP cannula. This ensures easy insertion. Thanks to four embedded radiopaque strips, it can also be easily identified on an X-ray image. It is also equipped with an integrated injection port that can be used for intravenous administration of fluid medication if required.
The use of safety cannulae, e.g. the Vasofix Safety Braunüle, offers additional safety. It comes with a safety mechanism that secures the needle tip immediately after it is pulled out, thus preventing needlestick injuries. The Vasofix Safety catheter also has an integrated needle port, just like the Vasofix Braunüle, is completely PVC-free and has a hydrophobic blood stop valve, which makes it easy to detect the first backflow of blood during puncture.
Stylet for Closing the Catheter Lumen
A stylet is inserted into the cannula opening after the infusion to keep the catheter open and prevent blood clots from blocking the vein. Thus, the needles can be reused. The stylet consists of a thin plastic mandrel which is attached to a cap.
The secure Luer-Lock connection between stylet and cannula reliably prevents air from entering. The stylet size is colour-coded and can thus be easily matched to the cannula size. In our online shop you will find the BD Insyte Autoguard stylet in different versions (pink, green and grey), for the BD Insyte Autoguard IV catheters, or the Vasofix stylet, which is suitable for the respective Vasofix IV catheter depending on the colour coding (from blue to orange).
A Large Variety of IV Cannulae & Accessories
To fix the sterile IV catheter in place, there are special catheter plasters that are precisely adapted to the shape of the catheter and thus facilitate dressing changes. Mandrins can be used to hygienically close the cannula when not in use. After use, the needle should be disposed of in a suitable needle collector to avoid needlestick injuries. At Praxisdienst, you not only receive peripheral venous catheters and cannulae, but also matching stylets, catheter plasters and other medical infusion accessories at favourable prices.
You will find suitable products for hand disinfection as well as for disinfecting the puncture site before inserting the intravenous catheter in the category disinfectants. In addition, we also offer a wide range of dressing materials for the care of the puncture site. In addition to venous catheters and cannulas, you can also find a wide range of disposable needles in our online shop.
