Butterfly Needles - Easy and Practical
A winged needle - or butterfly needle is a sterile, disposable needle that stands out thanks to its special design. The venipuncture equipment consists of a thin needle that is generally made from chrome-nickel steel, a pair of flexible wings and flexible tubing with a Luer connector. The needle is particularly advantageous when used for blood collection, as the blood collection tubes are not attached to the needle itself, rather than to approx. 30 cm long tubing.
As a result, sample tube changes become particularly uncomplicated to perform. Moreover the blood collection needles are secured during the procedure, which means that the medical professional can use both hands to change tubes without risking the needle from slipping.
When applying the needle, the butterfly wings can be pushed together to allow for secure handling and guiding. As soon as the blood collection needle has entered the vein, the wings are secured to the patient's skin with help of adhesive tape. As a result, the device is guaranteed to stay in the correct position during blood collection, phlebotomy, medication administration, infusions and other venipuncture procedures, without the risk of piercing the venous wall.
Administrating Infusions with Help of the Butterfly Needle
The butterfly is the ideal equipment for infusions that don't need to be administered daily or several times a day. As it is easy to place and secure, the needle is perfectly suitable for short-term medication administration. Particularly in adult patients with thin veins, children and elderly patients, the butterfly needle is a great alternative to standard catheters, as it is available in very small sizes, is easy to apply and much shorter than e.g. the Vasofix Braunüle. Like the Vasuflo Winged Infusion Set, many butterfly needles are inserted at an angle to facilitate punctures.
Safety Needles to prevent Needlestick Injuries
In addition to the standard equipment, such as the Vasuflo from Dispomed Witt, we offer safety venipuncture needles to prevent needlestick injuries. These safety cannulas are equipped with a built-in safety mechanism, which can be activated after blood draws. Once activated, the protection can't be disengaged and the needle won't be re-exposed. As a result, the risk of accidentally reusing a needle is effectively prevented and the medical personnel can't injure themselves on the needle tip.
Multifly Blood Collection Needles
The Multifly is a special needle that is exclusively used with Sarstedt Monovette systems. At the end of the kink-resistant tube, there is an adapter to directly secure the blood collection tubes. The Multifly also exists as a safety needle for use with the S-Monovette systems and offers additional protection during blood drawing.
Painless Punctures with the Butterfly Needle
The venipuncture needle has a special precision bevel and a thin silicone coating to guarantee minimal puncture trauma. As a result, the procedures are very low on pain. For this reason, these venipuncture supplies are especially suitable for use in paediatrics.
