Distilled Water
Distilled Water
Distilled water is chemically pure, demineralised laboratory water that, depending on its composition, can be used for food analysis, industry, laboratories or in the medical sector. In our online shop you will find distilled water for various purposes and at reasonable prices. More information on distilled water
Distilled Water for Laboratory, Surgery and Industry
Aqua Dest or distilled water is made from regular source water as well as regular tap water. To distill and purify the water, it is separated from mineral substances and, depending on the filtration process, also from organic substances and microorganisms such as bacteria, resulting in chemically pure water. For particularly pure water that is free from contaminants, this process is repeated a second or even third time.
Difference between Demineralised and Distilled Water
Distillation is a very time-consuming and energy-intensive process, which means that its production is associated with high costs. Therefore, other technical processes are often used as an alternative to obtain pure water. The water is desalinated using reverse osmosis systems or ion exchange systems. The result is fully desalinated water, also known as demineralised water.
The main difference between demineralised and distilled water is possible residues of organic impurities and microorganisms. While these usually remain in the evaporator during distillation, they are not removed from the water during demineralisation by reverse osmosis or ion exchanger.
Aqua Dest and Aqua Bidest: Common Applications
Single distilled water, also known as aqua dest or aqua destillata, is used in a variety of applications, such as cosmetics, chemistry, pharmaceuticals, medicine or industry. It is often used as a solvent and cleaning agent. For example, it is ideal for making dilutions. The prepared solution is not disturbed or contaminated by salts contained in regular drinking water.
Distilled water can also be used for cleaning in the laboratory. For example, it is used to rinse vessels to prevent stains caused by limescale deposits. In the technical field, it is excellently suited for use in various devices, such as car batteries or air humidifiers, as no lime or dirt residues remain when the water evaporates.
Aqua Bidest is derived from the Latin aqua bidestillata and refers to the state of double distilled water. This chemically pure water can basically be used for the same purposes as Aqua Dest. Since it offers even higher purity, it is generally preferred. If distilled water is to be used for certain medical purposes, such as infusion solutions, eye drops or injections, the water must be sterile.
Distilled water is subject to various standards that provide information about its properties and the purposes for which it is approved. For example, VDE 0510 and DIN 43530 state that the water can be used for certain technical purposes, e.g. as a suitable electrolyte and refill water.
